Getting started
« on: February 18, 2016, 01:47:48 AM »
We want to start into the club calf business.  We mostly have angus crossed with shorthorn cows. Moderate sized cows...for this first year looking to A.I. around 5 of them to get some clubby calves... what is everyone's opinion on what bull to use. We are located in Canada so must be bulls we can get semen on up here. We were looking at unstoppable. Thanks

Unstoppable is one of the best out there and really works on Shorthorns where alot of the black are hit and miss.-It would help if I knew what semen you can get-Raymond Gonnet New Age Genetics who helped bring along a bunch of them including Young Money would be your best bet on getting semen and whats where-He has a young money son Renegade Bluies who is very good O0

WALKS ALONE is probably the "biggest bang for your buck" bull,to use on non clubby cows.

We were going to purchase the semen from semex. Another bull we were thinking  about was walks on water.

I heard some of the walks on water didn't have much hair.  I have a good Walk This Way bull calf.  Fu Man Chu's have started doing some winning.  Nun Better looks like he may work along w/ one in the chamber from Semex's catalog.

From the semex book Dakota gold or one in the chamber would be my choice, not really many options if you are looking to get some chrome into those calves, however Red White and Roan could do that for you but you would need to contact Kurtis Reid for that,  all this assuming your cows are black

If you go with Walks Alone try to get started early as far as breaking them goes. Some are defiant!

Walks Alone calves are easiest to work with if you start from birth.  I haven't had a mean one, but some of them can be prone to panic attacks when something surprises them.
