People who talk to an excess are usually trying to convince you and themselvles that they know what they are talking about.

I listen to what everyone has to say and have since the start... before I knew anything about feeding out calves I was kinda of a sponge and absorbed everything people told me...then over the years as I have devoloped my own program I still listen and learn... you will never know it all and you will have to listen to alot of people tell you things you already know but you never know when someone will tell you something new and usefull to your program...JMO

I would say that the people who I have learned the most from have been the ones that I had to work the hardest to get the information from them.  Sometimes they will disclose a few tips and tricks if you purchase an animal from them and request advice on how to manage your purchase.  ;)

everyone has their own ideas about how it should be done, most people will let some ideas slide but keep many things to themselves so I just take everything with a grain of salt and use the parts I like or believe and piece it all together.

Don't mean to be rude but if that's the way you feel you picked the wrong board to visit. If you post a question here people are going to try to help you. Some good advice, some not so good you will have to figure that out for yourself.

I understand you have to take in a decide what is true and what isn't but i don't like it is when people start trying to help people where it isnt need i guess. Example We were at F. Worth and i was helping a new kid trim he had an okay euro cross. He took it just for it to go we know it is only going to be a county steer. While were there all these people were telling him diffrent things to do and so now he is going to do them but what they dont understand is that it wont help for our county show. So i guess i should have said i hate when people butt in where they are not needed and don't understand all the circumstances and in the end i know its going to hurt this kid and he has a chance to win our county show.

I will tell anyone anything that asks for advice. Ill be honest I will ocasionally ask the person what there planning on doing with the calf if it looks to me that they need a little help. But thats just me trying to help. If people sound like no it alls I just laugh it off and do it my way....
The only person who knows er all is the person that went to their grave with a few head off cattle in there name or the person who sells out because he realizes it just isnt worth it. ;D

Great advice, ranchrack:  One should always be available to listen and learn.  You will have to sort out the good from the bad, but never convince you know more than another.

When you stop learning, stop listening, stop looking and asking questions, always new questions, then it is time to die.

I guess it's this way in anything you do, but the show calf deal seems to have more than it's share of overnight experts.  I agree that we all have something to learn, and it's only our own loss if we don't keep trying to learn.  I also agree that you can't believe everything you hear.

That said, I still have these observations...

If you are just getting started and looking for advice, you really need to find someone that you trust and try to do it like they tell you.  Nothing is more frustrating from the standpoint of being an ag teacher, 4H leader, or a breeder (or trader) who sold you a calf and is trying their best to help you than for you to do something totally opposite because someone you ran into in line at the concession stand or someone a thousand miles away on the internet told you to.  Now please don't think I'm saying asking for advice here is bad - it's not, but if it's contrary to what someone who is close to you and is trying to help is telling you, discuss it with them before you do it.  Maybe they can explain to you why they don't think it would work on your calf at this time, or maybe they'll agree it's worth trying.  But nothing will sour someone on trying to help you quicker than your just ignoring their advice and being proud of it.

I think we hit the nail on the head with this one.  Observation can tell you pretty quickly if you should actually listen to the advice someone is giving you.  And sometimes, you can learn just as much of what "not" to do, as what to do by listening to people.
