Hereford Heifer Opinions
« on: July 23, 2009, 09:03:03 PM »
This heifer was born March 17 and weighed 92 lbs. Her sire is a Feltons Domino 774 son and she out of probably my best cow. I've retained her half sister and sold her half brother last year as a show steer. I haven't decided whether I will keep her or try to sell her.

She hasn't been clipped, not even washed/rinsed really. She's just been on grass and mom, with an occasional bead or two of alfalfa hay to keep the cows coming up. She's super gentle, and the cows were up tonight so I decided to get the halter on her, work her and try to get some pictures.

Here's what I came up with. Let me know what you think of her. In the first picture that's her tail switch, not a big white mark. Thanks.

I like her.  Put a price on her that you would be happy with if she sold.  If she doesn't bring that then keep her.  Everything on this place is for sale at the right price.  (Including my wife ;D).  A good cow family is worth a lot.  You know this cow family. That is what I would do for what that is worth.

I'd say the same as steered. She looks good enough to keep back if you dont get what you want out of her. With good heifers there is no such thing as trying to sell them, just putting a price on them and if you dont get it, make money on her as a cow.

If I were you I'd take that price right back off the wife, you ain't gonna find NO ONE else that's gonna put up with you! (clapping)

I just figured that if I got her sold that I would just come and bunk with the boys at your house!
You have room in the barn for my hereford/lowline crosses don't you?

Yes knabe, This heifer will take on our goat, and I've seen her dam chase a coyote out in the pasture. The "danger" instinct is still strong.

I wouldn't trust my cows to do that.  Making them real tame just takes the natural instinct out of them, IMO.  However, we have a donkey that absolutely hates any kind of dog.  I would almost feel sorry for the coyote if he tried to mess with my calves.....almost.
