There have been numerous inquiries about how scrambles work lately.  In 2009 my oldest son caught a calf in Houston and received a $1500 certificate to purchase a heifer to return and show in 2010.  This was a year long process of writing monthly reports, financial statements, breed essay and year end essay.  These items along with a pictoral scrapbook and stall direction had timeline dates to be met.  After all was said and done he received Reserve Supreme Scrambler out of 300+ participants.  The lessons he learned from his hard work greatly overshadowed the original money he received and these lessons should help him as he continues to mature.  I encourage any young person to become involved in this type of program if they have the opportunity, it was good to see hard work pay off and I promise politics did not play a part.  My hat is off to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, they do it right.

I caught a calf in '87 and it was a great experience! Congratulations for putting in all the hard work and being rewarded for it!

It is what you learn, not what you win from showing that is the real prize.  Congrats to all the kids that caught and showed scramble heifers.

By the way, we sell Angus HEIFERS and gladly accept SCRAMBLE CERTIFICATES. One of our heifes was Reserve Champion Angus Scramble Heifer.

So you get $1500, can you add to that and get a chance at a better heifer or are they all $1500 heifers?
Congratulations to your boy. Sounds like quite a achievement.

Frostback, we sell 4-7 scramble heifers every year. Some kids have no other money, but we work with them the best we can and we usually have affordable heifers that compete well. We have had a number of customers add money to get our very best, "can't miss" calves.  We also provide FREE professional fitting and breeding for heifers we sell. You can see our quality on our website, christiancattleco.com.
Our major show champions this year cost $3300, $1750, $2250, and $3000. We had a June calf that stood second to the Summer calf Champ @ Ft. Worth that only cost $1500. We have depth in numbers to go with quality.

The scramble deal is a great program we raised the 2nd place lightweight angus heifer, a clubbier type heifer real thick and deep ribbed. A first time exhibitor and learned a lot and was able to teach them a lot! We also sell and accept certificates as Mr. Christian does we mainly raise exotics and a few british if they are to the clean up or were bred for replacements, and also can help people find some american cattle as we had the reserve brangus scramble heifer in 2008 behind lucherk. Goodluck to everyone and congrats on another great year of majors!
