I have a solid white shorthorn steer standing about 48" at the hip, weighing 1323 lbs. and we show next week. Trying to figure out how to make his hair "pop" he's really hairy but it seems as if it wants to lay flat and it is trained to stay forward (lot of gaurd hairs and not much of that good 'wooly' stuff). However, I can get it to pop just a little bit using the Zoom Bloom/Liniment Hair Mixture. Would any of ya'll know what other product mixtures or techniques that I can try to get his hair standing? I'm clipping on the other steers but I really need all the help I can get to get this calf's hair working right before I can start clipping on him for show!    (dog)
THANKS! ;D

Use a blower as much as possible. Once you get the hair dry going forward try blowing it up at a 45 or almost straight up. Combing it that way too will help also. Blowing them longer than just getting them dry really helps with getting the hair to stand up and pop. You could try using some foam/mousse in the hair to try to add some body on show day.

i have a steer just like yours. his hair is the hardest to pop. on show day, i used Mane Mousse, which is a horse hair product that i also use on my horses. i dont know where to find it in other states than Wisconsin, but i would look online. it comes out kind of like Sullivan's Revive does, a white mousse kind of stuff. i comb it in, straight up in his hair for about 5 minutes a side or until i cant see any more white, and then i blow for about 10 minutes a side just trying to pop the hair.. it worked really well! and his hair didnt go flat when i showed too!

I like to use Sullivan's styling moouse. I put it in the calves hair when I have them all dry, then I comb it forward and up at a 45 degree angle with a rice root brush and a sullivans stimulator comb. Then once it looks all nice and combed in, I blow it in for about five minutes. Now at that time it might not look like it has fluffed up that much, but when you are all done fitting the legs you put some final bloom on the calf for the finishing touch. And after you put that final bloom in, blow the hair forward and up and then comb it up. After you do that, the hair just "pops". The final bloom has a really good reaction with the styling moose. Good Luck!  (thumbsup)

I mix lectric shave and zoom bloom in a mixture that we blow on that helps the hair pop more than just zoom bloom or zoom bloom and liniment mixture does.

Clipping probably makes the hair do what you need more than anything.  I know your post said you wanted the hair to pop for clipping, but a good hair cut goes a long way on making that final presentation you need for the show ring.

If Lectric Shave/Zoom Bloom should give you the pop you need....but when you think you have blown her enough, start over and blow her again.

One trick that seems to work really well for us is taking a scrub brush and just brushing them dry. It will take a very long time but it seems to work very well.

I second the lectric shave/zoom bloom mix.

I know you want to pop his hair and then clip him, but it's gonna work a lot better the other way around. After you get him blown out take your blower and blow a little bit of pink into him. After that, comb all of his hair forward. NOT UP. It will lay flat like you said, but the longer guard hairs will be visible and be standing up a little more than the hair underneath. Take a medium blade and go over his whole body knocking off just the longer guard hairs. It's not going to seem like you've taken off much and his hair will be even flatter looking, but comb it up and you will be amazed. A little bit goes a long way when your body clipping.

You can get it at walmart, walgreens, cvs, etc... It's not a shaving cream it's a pre-shave, it's in a green bottle, and it'll be on the same aisle as the shaving cream.

We have a fogger, but we also pour this mixture into a mountain dew bottle and put a straw in it.  Put your finger against the straw and put the end of the straw facing the animal with the blower tip against the straw and you have a fogger for $1.50!

Lectric shave isn't cheap if you are fitting a lot of animals but it works.  Any place that sells shaving products should have it, green liquid.

Good luck!
