He should have stayed in a smaller area so the calf wouldn't have room to fight until the calf would follow him without fighting.

I think he's doing fine.  He's holding his ground and not letting the calf get away...

I think he's doin allright too, only i would have about another 100 foot of rope in my hand instead of 20 like he has, then tie it around my body and turn him out in the open. Something would soon have to give.  Also that steer is going to think he's a swell guy after he hit's the ground another 5 times.

This is how we used to do it until a couple of years ago one steer charged my husband who is 6'3" and weighs 325 lbs.  The calf hit him right at the knees lifted him up in the air and DH was actually horizontal to the ground at one point.  He flew over the calf’s back and landed on the cement flat on his back.  This was defiantly one of the few times DH actually let go of the leadrope.

I'm glad there aren't videos of me trying to break calves out.  That one is fairly mild compared to some that I've dealt with over the years.  The only thing missing is a helper hitting the calf in the butt (or over the head) with a 2x4.  And loud cussing does help!

I had a calf in the barn last night that had never had a halter on before.  I could scratch him a little only while he was eating before last night.  Within 2 minutes I had the halter on his head, had combed him all over within 20 minutes and at the end of a half hour we had moved from a 10 X 10 area to a 10 X 30 and we were taking a few steps at a time around the stall.  No bawling, yelling or throwing himself on the ground.  I am guessing he will be broke to tie and lead by the weekend.

Started breaking a full flush display bull three days before i was going to stick him in a booth, and he was a typical full flush.  Got the job done, alot of work.  Kicked me square in the head when i was hocus pocusin him after the displays were over.

by the looks of it, he needs more time to come around OR that calf is nuts

im thinkin the latter

if you think this calf is nuts, you haven't seen one that is "nuts".  this calf will be fine. he just hasn't been on halter long and he will figure it out.  they usually fall down when they don't know what the halter is yet.  when they know what the halter is the calf is not the one on the ground if they are nuts!

Think it would help to have her in a smaller pen to start. He's young and strong, though, not like some of us (me) old croanies.  Have to agree with RW about the donkey, though...there's gotta be an easier way!  I've been using Red's way of halter breaking and have had calves walking around the arena by the 2nd time they've been tied.  'Course I've had others that aren't that easy.  Kinda like the video but in a smaller pen.  ;)

Not bad. I've seen a lot worse. I have one that broke to lead in a couple of days. I also have one that still "sulks" and falls over on her side when she wants. Funny stuff.
