Okay my question is that I have 2 show heifers, one is a Paddy O'malley calve and one is a Almost famous calve Paddy is a PH carrier and Almost is a TH carrier but both dams are limi angus cows so what are the odds of me having Ph or Th positive calves?

If you mate a carrier of a recessive defect (ie PHA or TH) to a carrier for the same defect you have a 50% risk with each mating that the offspring will be a carrier.

If you mate a carrier of a recessive defect (ie PHA or TH) to a clean animal you have a 50% risk with each mating that the offspring will be a carrier.

The big difference is that mating carrier to carrier also gives you a 25% risk of having a dead calf with each mating (and a 25% rsik of having a "normal" calf), while mating a carrier to a clean gives you a 50% risk of having a carrier and a 50% risk of having a clean calf.

It is like tossing a coin - if it comes up heads or tails on toss ten doesn't have anything to do with what it did on toss 9.

So for you heifers there is a 50% chance that they are carriers and a 50% chance that they aren't. Hope that helps - good luck ;)
