This is my daughters first year steer and I am looking for info on insurance.
I think it would be a good idea to have coverage on her project but locally we can only get it in a large group policy.
any advice on this subject?

We insure our show calves with American Livestock and this is our agent we use:
Jerry Gay Agency
PO Box 42128
Memphis, TN 38174-2128
T 901-276-2855
F 901-276-0758

We learned our leason the hard with one of our first steers. We only had the steer for a day and he died in a freak accident and we were out that money ever since the we insure our show calves. In the last 8 yrs we have only had one claim and I am glad we had the insurance they paid promtly and we were able to replace the calf. They do have a special plan for 4H and FFA. Its not exspensive.

Their are many options to insure a junior project.  The first place I would check is with who ever you have your home owners policy.  Most companies that write farms in state that have junior programs will allow you to schedule a junior project onto your farm policy. It is generally less expensive than putting them on a separate policy.  Usually requires letter from an Ag agent,  ffa instructor or vet to verify the health and value of the animal.  The companies that I know will cover projects are Republic, Farmers Union, Rain And Hail, American Indemnity, American Reliable and usually Farm Bureau. American Livestock is a good place for a stand alone policy, I personally have some bulls covered with them, but would have them on my home policy if they were junior projects. If you have any questions let me know.

may i ask what happend to your steer SKF just out of curiosity if not that's fine too i understand

One of my son's first steers was a jumper and the first day we had him he jumped out a couple of times and that night we thought we had him in secure pen but when he went to jump out he got his leg stuck and snapped it in half and died. we found him in the morning hanging by his leg. Then we had a young bull that some how injured himself to where he was paralyzed and had to be put down. The insurance company was very good about paying us on the bull calf. So now we try to insure all the show calves especially the ones we have a lot of money into.

Thank you all for your advice. Skf and Will i will look into  that.
this calf is for our county and we plan on going to 4 or 5 junior shows in our area so there will be some exposure. plus i just want to be covered.  we are going to have quite a bit of money into the project before we get to county and I dont want my daughter to lose alot of money if something was to happen.she finally made enough money off her other projects to move up to steer  lol.
once again thank you

Farm Bureau does insure your 4-H animals but their rates have gotten crazy over the last few years.  I have been told that it is because they lump our livestock into the same group with race horses which seem to have a lot of "accidents".  This may not be the case in your area.  I have found the most reasonable insurance is through Hartford.  Ours runs about $.05.5 per $100.

Insurance is one of those funny things.  You never want it or need it till you really need it.  It's all based on how much risk you are willing to take.  When we started out, we insured our show pigs.  Today, with the prices we pay for steers, the pig prices are cheap.  But, accidents happen.
