What are your thoughts on insurance on show cattle?  Given my most recent situation, I am looking into it for future cattle that we buy.

My thoughts were keeping insurance on cattle at least until they had their first calf.

How much money does that normally cost?  Believe me right now, it seems like it would be well worth it.

Any recommendations on who to go through?  We, as well as others have had dealings with someone known nationally in the past, and there are many people who not fans of hers including us.

the only time I insured a cow was a heifer we bought at the Ohio Beef Expo. cpmpared to some of the prices, she wasn't that expensive. I've never insured a steer but know of some that have.

We only insure our animals through the show season just in case something happens to them in transport or at the show. By the time we are done showing them they are old enough to collect or flush. Another option is to get a cell line. If they are expensive animals the cost to carry insurance on them is a real burden.

It is the first step in the cloning process. It is around $1000 to do and will store forever. We have one cell line in storage now if the cost of cloning would go down we could actually do something with it.

How much does it cost to clone?
Can you store the cell line in your tank or does some other place store it for you?  How do you collect that?

Thanks

Here is a link http://www.cyagra.com/. The cell line stays stored at Cyagra so they can start the cloning process. The genetic material is collected out of a pea sized piece of ear that you punch out and mail to them. I think a clone will cost around $19000 but with the way technology is advancing I hope it gets to a more reasonable price soon.

We ony insure what we couldn't afford to replace.  Our very expensive heifers we will insure until the 1st calf hits the ground, with a cell line, you really wouldn't even need that.  We also use Harding & Harding.

We insure a lot of our cattle and I am glad we do. Last year we lost a really nice bull that we bought and the insurance company paid out right away and then we were able to afford to replace him. We use Harding and Harding. I recomend it and it was worth it. I am not sure about cloning because you have to start all over it was much easier replacing ours with another bull that could start breeding.
