We're headed to K.C. this weekend, taking heifers to the National Junior Hereford Show - have a couple questions about barns and tie-outs -

I realize the barn is air-conditioned, but what temperature can we expect?  Is it "Louisville - cold," or just a bit cooler than it would be without AC?  I know at Louisville in the summertime you can freeze in parts of the barn - I'm guessing it's not that cool in Kansas City.

Also - would fans at the tie-outs be a good idea?  We have a generator, but would just as soon leave it in the trailer if we could!

Any other suggestions from you recent KC Junior show participants would be appreciated!

No where near as cold as Louisville.  We (Maines) were were the sheep usually are and it was cooler there than where the main cattle part is (where shorthorns where).

I suggest an awning in tieouts.  Ours got twisted the the storm from h-e- double hocky sticks, but its necessary.  If possible get the head of your cattle facing the railroad tracks so the evening sun doesn't hit there heads.  Fans in tie-outs would be nice, but even with chains locking it down, I know of one generator that was stolen during our jr. nationals.  Sadly, there were alot of sticky fingers at our Jr. Nationals this year.

Good luck!  Your arena is GORGEOUS, wait until you see the mural.  Wish my daughter would have gotten to show in that ring.  She was a little envious, but that's a 10 year old.

It was decent in the barn, but it wasn't really hot the week Maines were there, it would probably be cooler if they could keep the doors shut, but not cold by any means.  Ventilation is really poor in the barn, I am still having problems breathing, between the wood chips and aerosol sprays it's pretty yucky air.
I would not suggest fans in tie-outs unless you have someone there all night.  Our generator was stolen the 1st night there and I heard of at least 7 others that went missing throughout the week.  I would also suggest if you are parking in Liberty Lot make sure you have a trailer hitch lock, security said there was a box truck that was taken from there.
This is a nice facility centrally located and they are trying really hard to make improvements to attract some of the Jr. National shows in the future so any positive suggestions would probably be welcome in the Royal office.

Thanks for the suggestions - we were considering the awning idea.  What kind of awning did you use?  We need something to cover 6 head.  We've been to Kansas City lots in the fall, but this is our first trip there in the summer time.  Our 9-year-old is looking forward to showing heifers in the GORGEOUS arena with the mural!  This is her 3rd junior national - Louisville, Denver, and now Kansas City...her dad says there is something not right about showing in those 3 facilities before the age of 10!

We used an easy up from Walmart for $89.  Were hoping to get it fixed.  Just bent it a little.  Some were terrible, but I had her buckled down pretty well! (thumbsup)
