I though I would start this thread to see what people think.  I know he is young we are waiting for a little while to see how he turns out.  He is  a MAB out of a Wazn't Me (Maine) cow.  This is our fist year for using MAB and really like the calves out of him.  MAB sure puts his stamp on them.  I have been looking for some more MAB semen in Canada but I think it has dried up and with his popularity in the US I do not think there will be much more coming up here. I was thinking he could be our in herd replacement for MAB genetics.  I really like his mother she is very strong phenotype.  He has tons of hair and it makes his head look a little funny with his coloring.

Great looking cow as well. I'm usually the one on SP that says keep him a bull. This guy also needs to stay the way he was born if he is sound structured.  I think he'll work on a lot of different cows.

The way his shoulder ties into his neck and the angle of his shoulder is an issue for me.  I would also like to know if he hocks in as he travels ?*

Wide and Big hipped, love the paint. Long spined and a heavy milking mother.
Bull  (pop)

EDIT: What was his birth weight?
-I would leave him a bull until weaning and if he gets any better (not that there is something wrong with him now) or grows  really well etc.
Good luck and good calf!

Leave him until weaning and see how he matures. I love the mother, she can be useful any way you look at it.

Wondering why you read my post but decided not to answer my question concerning hocking in as he travels?  Does he travel with a wide base or do his hocks come together on the move?

I will have to watch him closely when he walks when I am home on the weekend.  I have to work to support my cow habit.  Although right now when he is on the move it usually at full speed with a few bucks and jumps.

If you have to ask, steer him. Great calf,  but I hate how unproportional the neck and the giant heads on these MAB calves.

I agree...when in doubt cut them. Unless you want to keep him in your herd...

What do you think you could get for him as a steer? What is his value to you as a clean up bull?
In Canada the steer market is not as strong as the US.  We have sold a steer for $3400 at Agribition.  Some steers get over the $5000 mark at Agribition.  If he could produce me a few 2500 steers he will be well worth it. We will see how he turns out and grows.

Keep him as a bull until he matures. Its a lot easier to turn a bull into a steer than it is to turn a steer into a bull lol.

I would say he has a normal width of base.  His hocks do not even come close together when he is on the move.  I have seen wider width of base on some Walks Alone calves but they almost look like they bow out.  He is very young so time will tell.  Thank you for your opinions
