This is my opinion only. Both bulls you mentinoned were spring 08 models. Meaning that their first crops is this year. Just because they came out of a calving ease sire like Ali look at both dams on these bulls. One is a Heat Seeker and one is Fear This. Both of those bulls have large calves. I think it would be a 50 50 chance an til they are proven. Currently they are green. now if you are willing to take the chance and have a great vet that can do c-sections pretty quickly I say go for it. We tend to be cautious and error on side of safe and use proven calving ease bulls like Northern Improvement, Gizmo, Jake's Proud Jazz and Traveler T510. I am not sayin either bull won't work out to be the next great thing. But the Sire and Dam on both have to be considered when evaluating calving ease. YOu are establishing the productive future of your heifers and c-section or a prolapse can be a tough way to start it out. I am not trying to be negative in anyway just practical and logical. Some club folks say if you ain't taken them out the side you ain't got a winner. I just can't eat that much expense in our operation. Good Luck!

I agree, I no longer breed any clubbie bulls until cow is 3 years old. I know some people have had good luck but once you pull them and also take some out the side like I have it is not worth it. And most of those problems were ALI calves. Its tough on you and also extremely tough on the heifer. Some will never breed again after a c-section. Plus I am yet to have any show stoppers out of heifers anyways. They all come from my 3yr old and up cows.

Use a proven calving ease bull that has been around for at least a few years. We have a purebred maine that is an Ali son and he had a low BW but we have had BW all over the place from 37 lbs to 115 lbs. We have breed him with clubby and shorthorn cows.Trust me it is never any fun to lose a cow and calf which happened to us this year.h

I would use Dirty Harry or Jakes Proud Jazz. I think these are the two best options in my opinion.
Heck, around here we always go with what's proven, especially on some of our British bred females. Angus are king in calving ease, and a good 'ol Hereford is also right up there. Northern Improvement (Angus) has been used with success. Don't gamble with young clubby bulls, as OH said.

If you are trying to raise show calves,out of first calf heifers,listen carefully,Jake's Proud Jazz or Total Solution and not in any particular order.Most folks who have used both bulls will tell you Total Solution has just as good of calving ease numbers as Jake. In my opinion,and the Mrs. will back me up on this,Total Solution calves out of black cows tend to be stouter and sell better at weaning time. His weights fluxuates like any other bull,but mostly to the good. 58# to 80# not 73# to 110# like some calving ease type bulls.In most cases people fail to count the cow's side of the equation when breeding and sad as it is,there are probably some poor management skills.I like Angus as much as the next person,but when you have small numbers you have to think of quality when breeding crossbreds.There are exceptions to every rule,some folks have good luck with them I guess and that's fine by me.

I'd try some of the more stylish angus sires.....the calves may still ahve soem weight but they arent a square trying to come out. and usually can keep the heifers for nice cows.... as for the 2 bulls you started the post with. i would say california dreamin he was my favorite "calving ease" bull they promoted theis year
