just wonder what people though of this article. i actually talk with one of the veterinarians last week that testified against  raw milk sales, and he had some interesting comments about it...... From a public health side of things this scares the hell out of me!... i guess i have a good Microbiology teacher in Vet school who reiterated the "500 disease you can get from raw milk"

FYI - you can get rabies from raw milk

just spuring some discussion here

people died from organic spinach.

we should outlaw that too.

about 40,000 people die from cars every year.

we should outlaw them too.

you can get rabies from wild animals.

we should outlaw them too.

"Children and people with immune system and heart diseases, diabetes and other chronic conditions are most at risk, he said."

well, maybe those people can avoid raw milk so the rest of us can enjoy it.  nobody is forcing anyone to drink it. i happen to like it. why not have a permit to sell it?

perhaps we should all eat soylent green.

You can get deadly sick from eating many different kinds of foods if not cooked right. I dont see why raw milk would be anymore dangerous than they are?

The USDA and a consolidated meat processing system scares the hell out of me.

I will tell you that folks are working around this issue here in Ohio. I had to laugh. I was approached by a lady that said FINALLY I can get my raw milk. I said what do you mean. She said I bought interest in a cow. I said what? The only way you can consume raw milk is if you own the cow.  farmer is selling "shares" in his cow and selling raw milk. How smart is that? LOL.
I grew up on raw milk. Never got sick and never got a disease. My entire family drank it for years. the one task I hated was milking the cow in the summer. Flies and mosquitoes UGH!

We grew up on it and I am pretty sure Dad did not wash the udders down with an antibacterial rinse before milking.  Gave us iron guts.

Kudos to all of you who appreciate raw milk.  I was force-fed it and hated it!  Never been so happy to see a cow leave the place!

I  do not ever post replies on here but this is a hot topic to me. Raw milk can be as safe or safer than any milk you buy in a store. You have a personal relationship with the owners of the cow, or goat in which you are getting milk from. You will actually visit the farm and see where the products come from. These owners can personally insure the health of the animals and the handling practices of the milk. I assure you that any farmer will be cleaner with their products and take more pride in their commodities than your minimum wage milk plant workers. Have you ever wondered what low paid disgruntled workers really do to your food. Besides the cleanliness and wholesomeness of the milk I will always believed that we have the right to purchase raw milk if we desire, we always have someone looking out for our well being and look where that got us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I sure think that I will take my chances on the family farm over what the government tends to feed us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

maybe we could make it a religious thing, maybe change our skin color to brown or some other protected bs that always gets exemptions to the law.

i wonder if they would go after illegal aliens this aggressively.  or maybe not sell them guns to kill our border patrol.

nah.

I have worked with raw milk cheeses befor, and there is nothing scary about it. Now, the pink slime that is served at fast food gives me nightmares.

What's Wrong with you?  I too grew up on raw milk, and wouldn't have had it any other way.  Of course, we all now know that that high fat Jersey milk might not be the best thing for you, chlorsteral wise... but hey, it beats that store boughten further watered down crap...

For those of you who don't like raw cow's milk.. try goats milk.. It's the same texture as store bought milk, but with many more, smaller fat particles than cows milk.  We've had mixed results on the flavor from that goat milk, and find it varies greatly b/w does.  One won't be fit to drink, and the next will be outstanding...

TB is a good reason to outlaw raw milk.  Comparing contagious diseases to cars seems juvenile.  Our roads last year were the safest since 1950 something, and considering how much we drive compared to then that impresses me.  When driving I at least have some control most of the time to stop an accident and avoid bad drivers, you walking around coughing TB is a little harder for me to spot without having my microscope glasses in.  While lots of people have grown up on raw milk and some still do it does come down to your immune system.  You are slowly introduced to the raw milk as a child and build immunity to your herds pathogens, even when they change your body is a little ahead of the game from the days previous exposure to a much smaller pathogen load.  Selling raw milk from numerous herds and to many different people doesn't allow great immunity.  Also selling it in a grocery store should absolutely stay illegal, because one broken container could contaminate a lot of stuff in the back room, and the underpaid highschooler working late on a Friday and wants to get out of there, probably doesn't understand all the potential hazards.

if there is a test for tb and it takes a long time to become transmissable and there is a good management program with monitoring, etc etc, the risk seems low.

40,000 people die every year from car accidents.

if tb is such a problem, why don't we do a better job of screening immigrants?  seems that's where the risk is, especially since i had to fire someone who had it i was forced to hire for "equal opportunity" and had to go through major hoops to get rid of them and only officially got rid of them because they stole something.

comparing cars to diseases is not juvenile.  it merely compares risk factors.  if risks go up, you do something to mitigate risk.  if testing frequency catches it before transmission, then it should be doable.  it's a bigger risk to have laws to force consolidation to centrally process our food for all kinds of bacteria contamination, but instead, we put up pig fences and make it troublesome to get permits to wash vegetables and label it organic if we wash it with bleach.  seems the regulations are a little out of balance and not mature.

Immigrants and anyone visiting the US and/or returning are randomly screened.  If you have any titers for TB (which the vaccine causes) you must go on the 6 months of medicine as standard protocol.  Even documentation saying that you were vaccinated will not prevent you from having to take the medicine, unless the case that happened to a classmate is an outlier.

if the US was serious about TB, they would apply the same policy for milk as they do immigration.

schools have a program where they now teach kids when they sneeze or cough they cover their mouth with their elbow.

also, you can still die from USDA inspected beef processing plants and no one can guarantee sanitation for meat grinding, but it's still legal and a risk we are willing to take.

Pop glad you commented! First off let me say I think having a choice to the best decision. However, please don't slam the milk in the grocery store because family farms are also producing that milk. I don't know too many government owned dairies. We need all kinds of farms, big and small. From there the consumer can choose where to purchase their products from.
