I'm sure everyone has heard about all the refs, especially umpires, that are making tackles in college and pro games.  Now, i could understand them panicking and trying to defend themselves but some of the angles just make it look like they are flat out looking to punish the ball carrier.

here is an angle of the lsu vs. south carolina game that makes me think he is the 12th man... (watch his footwork to be specific)
do you also notice how he keeps his shoulders square and explodes into the quarterback? thats a form tackle minus the wrap

next is the more recent one. the still photos on yahoo were very impressive. this one still has me thinking. at times i feel like he tries to get out of the way but the forearm shiver just makes me feel like he was gunning for him the entire time. trying to think back to when i played football if i was not involved and the play was coming towards me, i would try and "bounce" off and stay on my feet. this looks like he is really trying hard to knock the ballcarrier off his feet!

i still would like to know what is going through these refs' minds when the plays develop but it must be a little bit more than self defense ;D

ok the first one, it definitely looks likes he went to take out the qb.  The 2nd one, he is just trying to protect himself and apparently he can take a bigger hit than the receiver.
