I had the opportunity to see this bull at a show in quebec, and all you guys say how perfect he is. The big thing for me is he is missing a rib, just to short sided. The bull that ended up beating him at this show in quebec was twice the bull. As far as semen it dose sound like they are trying to get people to use him on there better cows but what is that proving! Good cows make good babies regardless of what they are bred to, a real good bull will change a poor cow. Jmo but this bull is way over rated
Hey Mr. Judge, I think it's pretty "pansy like" of you to come into a thread and talk down a bull while you hide behind your secretive steer planet profile. I don't have a problem with people speaking their opinion and you did fairly respectfully, but take off the mask if you're gonna bash...

I was able to admire this bull in Toronto. I will admit he wasn't the first bull to catch my eye, but then I really looked at him and could hardly pick a fault in him. I will agree with Judge in saying I might put some more rib in him. Although, that's getting really picky. Overall an excellent bull who will sire some good ones I think.
In regard to the semen argument, I 100 percent agree with Trevor Grey Cattle.

Judge simply voiced his opinion, he didn't say this was a bad bull at all he just picked a small fault in the bull. He voiced his opinion respectfully and now people are bashing him for doing so. That's not fair, everyone likes a different 'type' of cattle.

It was respectable I agree. I'm just annoyed that people don't say who they are on here and therefore say a lot more than they would. It annoys me...

The bull out there that will give you five good calves from five pregnancies, in my opinion, does not exist!

I don't believe that you can sample a bull in under a minimum of ten pregnancies to different cows, therefore, I never buy less than 20 doses.

It's a little like buying a mutual fund versus buying shares directly on the market, if you are a novice, buy your 2-5 doses from a dealer, like a mutual fund.  If you know what you are doing, or are more comfortable with a higher risk, then buy the package on a well researched bull, which may be unproven on the market, but suits your specific requirements.

If you have done your homework well, you will have an advantage on the rest of the market, if not, or worse still, if you are unlucky and he doesn't click, you are only out of pocket for $2000, consider that to be your 'school fees' paid!

Thanks everyone for the kind words on Cabrera.  We are not trying to exclude anyone with our shares.  I am a breeder with only 15 cows myself and know about this.  That is why we are allowing people to split packages.  I know that 2000 is alot of money to put up on a bull in this breed, but I believe he is worth it.  We have had a few people decide to split packages so far and I invite people to ask.  As far as him being short sided I personally disagree with that statement but that is just my eye on a bull that I own so take it for what its worth.  He has obviously proved himself in front of many many great cattlemen that have come to me and to my partners to inquire about semen.  I believe that this bull has his faults but there is no bull out there that is perfect.  Thanks again everyone.

I know we are getting a package and we have a small 15-20 cow herd as well. I have liked this bull since he was sold and wish we had put in a bid at that time but this is the next best thing. I am looking forward to A.I.ing several of our heifers this summer to him (from the sounds of it he should be good on heifers??) and get some outcross genetics into our herd. We have a very nice herd bull ourselves out of Pioneer 126P and a Max Rosa cow and I think Cabrera will work nicely with his daughters. Any pictures of his 1st calves yet?? Would love to see them. Congrats on your success with Cabrera so far....it is well deserved and great to see some outcross genetics do this well!!!

I am assuming that the show in Quebec that Judge is referring to,is Expo-Beef in Victoriaville. The 2 shorthorn bulls that beat Cabrera were a yrlg bull from RK Cattle Co,Ontario, who went on to be crowned Interbreed Champion (Kirk Stierwalt was 1 of the 2 judges of the interbreed class). See picture on www.showchampions.com/image/AB13-11-0884. The reserve champion shorthorn was a Hot Commodity bull calf from Shadybrook Farms.more pics on showchampions.
Cabrera wasn't moving very well at this Show.

I have decided to make the trip up to Iowa for the beef expo in a few weeks.  I will be taking my tank and some Cabrera semen for anyone that wants to buy a package.  I will also have some Doc semen there as well.  Let me know and I can make sure I bring enough.

I decided to put a stick to Cabrera last night and get a hip height on him.  He is at 20 1/2 months 53 1/2 inches.  So it would make him about a 5 1/2 frame or so.

It's so exciting to see so much interest in this exceptional young bull. We couldn't be more pleased with how Cabrera has turned out and the success he is having and are so grateful for the great work of our partners and all those who are supporting him.
We truly believe he will leave quite a mark on the Shorthorn breed as he brings so much completeness and soundness to the table.. and he is real sweetheart to boot.

We have a 3/4 sister to the the calf Tom Mitchell is offering in the Iowa sale. She has worked extremely well for us and we are excited to use Cabrera semen on her awesome Tahoe daughter(High Ridge OC Ginger Puff 2A) this spring. Tom is including 2 straws of Cabrera with this Mitch's Queen Puff calf and she looks terrific in the catalog.

Again, many thanks to everyone who has had a hand in this, and please contact us if you have any questions or inquiries and like High Ridge Shorthorns on facebook to see more photos and videos.
