Has this cross been made successfully in the past?  This is the donor we are interested in using if it'll work....

Maternal foundation genetics for producing smokes for the showring.  I don't know if the F1's would be that show-worthy....

I think if you took her to man amoung boys you would be happy with show ring calves right away.

I'd think it would work.  I'd be real interested to see what you get out of that mating, if you do it.

Thanks for all the comments; I appreciate the input.  I am quite certain she would produce some jam up calves bred to Monopoly or Heat Wave or Solid Gold or Man Among Boys.  We may try some of these, too.  However; my kiddo is not yet old enough to show and I think what I'm out for right now is to produce a female that will produce my kiddo's show calf down the road.

I've seen a couple of Milkman smoky heifers that were really nice out of Meyer 734 females and I just wondered if it would work the other way around....putting the charolais with the Meyer for the maternal side of it and then taking that back to Heatwave or Monopoly or similar.

If I get a nice smoky heifer out of this donor, I don't want it to be done after a show season.  I want something with longevity and ability to out-produce her dam.  Hope that makes sense.

Hair may be your biggest issue.  Simmental x Charolais = rat tails.  Crosses that have worked well for us to produce what you are looking for include:  Who Made Who, Ali and sons, Ohlde type Angus bulls.  Find a clean club calf bull or a moderate framed angus bull and use the meyer 734 on a black cow.

Try a red bull, much better color and for making females I would go with: Loosli Right Kind 147, TJS Berry Cherry, or Real Deal.  If you wanted to go black you could look at BSAR Opportunity, BC Lookout, or Werner Wild Fire.  That would get you the best starting point without any rat tails and they would be solid females without as many hiccups as some of the clubby cows i.e. dystocia, udders, milk, temparament.....

The WHO MADE WHO recommendation was spot on.  Homozygous black, double clean, maternal machine and daughters produce winners.  This is exactly what I was looking for.  Ordered the WHO MADE WHO and will be making them this fall.  Thanks so much!

Do have one question....Here is another pic when she wasn't so close to calving.....does she truly need forerib and chest floor all that "desperately" (I believe that was the term used)--this is a PB charolais (and bred pretty well, I might add); her amount of forerib is fairly consistent with the breed as a whole (better than many, actually) and continental/exotics aren't exactly known for the single trait of having exceptional amount of forerib but are valued more for a balance of many other outstanding attributes, wouldn't you say?

If he didn't raise it- it lacks heart girth and rib and most likely isn't good enough to say grace over

I like your female and I think who is exactly what your looking for here

Don't let Jody jr bother you

She looks much better on this pic.  That's why it's so important to present a picture that accurately reflects the animal.  I've had Charolais bulls my whole life. Where people get off suggesting Chars are shallow chested I HAVE NO IDEA.

As far as cattle I raise lil buddy, you're right.  I don't purchase shallow chested cattle. Likewise, they don't have shallow chested calves.

The Jody Jr comment is a huge compliment. He's on his way to being a master breeder.  And as of last week, he's walking around with a Grand Champion banner.  (thumbsup)

Here's a Char bull that displays both adequate forerib and ample chest floor depth.  Notice the dewlap attachment as well.

She is your cow and you like her, about all you can ask for. I do not think I would be embarrassed if I had 3 or 4 like her in the pasture, lets put it that way. Good luck with the breeding on WMW you should get some nice cows.

You should recognize him; his momma is also your bull's momma......lol....

If you want to make it personal, the one I feed is light years better than the one you feed- M6 Led Weight 609.  Imagine that, a $5k bull that puts twice as much volume in his calves as the aforementioned.

I know there have been plenty of good ones out of Who Made Who cows, but you are sure injecting a chance for serious front end troubles on females out of that potential mating, particularly when you plan on going back with them.  In my opinion, there are better choices with less risk.

You originally asked if some of those types of crosses (i.e. Milkman x Meyer) worked both ways.  In my opinion, they often don't.  Most high end Milkman steers are coming out of smaller framed cows, which you probably would not get out of a Meyer mating.

Purebred charolais cows work very well with club calf bulls, but your risks (what tends to go wrong with any Charolais cows - not specific to yours) are calves that are either too big (frame) or too hard made.  That's what you need to mitigate.  I go two ways with cows like this in my own herd when I'm trying to breed replacements:  breed them to a HooDoo bloodline purebred/high % bull (to keep some purebred or close to it females - George, Troubador, or such) or breed them to a high % Maine bull to get replacement females (Cerveza, Escalade, Ali sons, etc).  Another option that is combination of these two is Yellowjacket - his females are starting to raise some barn burners.  Whatever your end result is, you go back on it with something from the Heat Wave line to produce steers.  Those bulls will throw all the belly and look you need.
