What will the mini-hereford on McKay's sale bring? and will she explode before the Red Rock calf gets to term?

Very interesting, was this lineup of the different types of cow backgrounds I've been seeing in catlogs- RA, Lim, Galloway, Mini herf, etc...  Makes a guy wonder?  Recips that didn't stick?  Or experiements?

well judging from the fact the mini herf sold at denver and brough (3 or 6K cant remeber) i would guess experiement....... or somebodys VERY expensive recip

It would be interesting to know how the cow calves. The way that I read the pedigree posted which I'm not super familiar with, the cow looks to be 1/4 mini Herf.

I'm not trying to cause a fight, I'm just curious to why some people are trying to breed for mini's.

replace the bubble of llama's, ostrich's, and other "farm" animal bubbles based on visual appeal rather than market appeal.

I wonder, without looking it up.. how much size difference is b/w a mini.. and say frame 3?

Texas has a pre-junior mini steer circuit.  I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe every TCCA sanctioned jackpot show has a mini steer division for kids ages 4 - 8.  The last I knew it was open to registered miniature steers of any breed, but it's almost exclusively mini Herefords that are being shown.  There was also a pre-junior mini Hereford steer class at the Tulsa State Fair this year, and talk of one at OYE in the near future.

Denver, Kansas City and Houston (that I know of) have mini Hereford steer shows, though they are in conjunction with the open shows, not the regular junior steer shows.

An average Mini is about a frame 0 some 00 and 000. I only deal with pure bred mini's so her being bred to red rock I'm not sure what she will be worth. But I'm assuming the cow isn't a frame score 0 shes probably a 1 maybe 2. I think that she will probably survive calving.

great looking cow, the only thing i don't like is the horns on her.

I went ahead and looked it up, mainly for personal knowledge.. The Mini Herf ass'n has a frame score chart, which was really  neat to look it..  Went all the way to frame 0000... 
Just for comparison:
At 2/3 years old: Female measurements on the left, males on the right:

So,the difference b/w a frame score 4 and frame score 11 animal at 2 years of age is 13 or 14 inches.  The difference b/w a frame score 3 and 0000 animal at the same age is also 13 or 14 inches. 

I'm going to guess that when they made this chart, they took that into account; but still that seems like a lot of difference that's really not likely.  Back to what the poster said, if most mini's fall into the 0 or 00 range- that would put them 5-7 inches smaller than a frame 3.  Which would be the equivalent to the difference b/w a frame 4 and a frame 6.5 to 7.5. 

To me, a few inches doesn't appear to be much; but when you think about the true size difference between a frame 7 and a frame 4- it sure seems and sounds like alot more... 

BTW- taking into account mature hip height of cattle, my 90% of my female sheep would fall into a frame score 0000 (1/2) to a 000, and my rams would fall into a frame score 000 easily.  Isn't that neat, that my sheep are bigger than some people's cattle?  I knew my sheep were bigger than the mini donkey we borrowed for a 'guard' animal this summer-- but cattle?? 

So back to the original question...  Do you suppose this resulting calf would be big enough to compete at a large sized steer show, or small enough to compete as a mini?  Or do  you suppose neither is the case, which is why they've decided to sell the cow, and let someone else make that call and have that worry?

Like I said there are very few 00 and 000 mostly 0 and 1 for females. The calf probably will be to small to compete in large shows. It

He probably wont meet height requirements for national miniature Hereford shows. As far as your sheep comments I'm not sure if your trying to bash minis..If you are we have our reasons for raising them

No, just stating a fact.. I like big sheep you like little cattle.  At one point in time, I thought mini cattle might be neat to have... 

I think it's ironic that some people talk about others creating sheep as big as horses or cows...Well, here's the proof that we're already bigger than some cows and  horses.

Sale pending on this heifer, but just for your viewing pleasure, attached is a 50% Lowline X 50% Mini Hereford. I ended up with the black baldy in the background too & she's very similar in size.  These 2 are way too small framed for me & for my taste.  Plus, I am really not a baldy fan, but these are pretty good, stout, easy keeping heifers and they were priced right... it was one of those too good of a deal to pass up type of things.  I think that it would be pretty interesting to see what type of calves she would produce if flushed to a clubby bull, but I'll gladly let somebody else conduct that experiment.

As long as they would be big enough to reach over a hog panel... I would think they have value... 

Is the mini/ small type cattle just a niche market?  Or how big of a hit would they take at the local United Reducers auctions?

Are their any 'large' scale operations producing these 'smaller' cattle?  Or just homeboys with 10 or 20 cows on 10 acres.??
