The latest Shorthorn Country came today.  I would like to hear comments about Muridale Raw Hide 6E. page 16.

He stood out when I saw the bulls. He’s thick , well structured and has a great head . I didn’t get to fully analyze each one but he definitely caught my eye.

The reason I asked for opinions is I think the way his rump is structured is different than a lot of bulls.  I see many bulls that have a tail head that points to the sky.  I think the slope from hooks to pins on him is a trait I would like to find.  I wish I knew something about his tenderness.

i've looked and there doesn't seem to be many producer friendly services for tenderness testing with shear force.

There is an ultra sound that Dr. Alan Williams has developed that will measure tenderness as well as all of the other traits.

Sorry we don't have any tenderness data on Muridale Raw Hide 6E.
I think he is one of our better bulls in our offering this year.
The first picture is of him and his dam.
The last picture is of his sire MURIDALE IRON MAN 4X who is sired by a bull from the 1960's , BONNYVIEW HERO 7Z

I like the heart girth of Iron man.  His mother looks good.  Not many people do have tenderness but it is very important to me.  I raise some gourmet grass fed beef so tenderness is probably the most important trait to me so I can't afford to make a mistake in that area.

Do you find there’s any significant relationship between actual tenderness and the Igenity testing? Has there been any research on this?

I have used it  in the past, it leaves me scratching my head.  I use linear measuring, Allen Williams ultrasound and I eat one Ribeye from each animal that I sell as meat to determine how tender it is.

Makes sense. Environment is substantially more important.

Were there even any Shorthorns used in the development of the test?

Bulls look like the kind that can put the Shorthorn's back into some relevance in the real beef world. Good cattle!! <beer>

Back in the early to mid-2000s, the folks at Waukaru were testing at least some of their bulls with the old GeneStar marker tests - and making that info available to people who were interested.
Now, as to whether or not those markers were even applicable to Shorthorns, I don't know... though some on this board may.  Are the newer genomic tests applicable to SH... or principally to Angus... I'm presuming that a predominantly AN population was used in formulating those tests...

We did take those genomic test results into consideration  in the past when we were using some Shorthorn sires here.  Waukaru Coppertop 464 had 4 of 6 GeneStar tenderness markers and 2 of 4 marbling gene markers, and got moderate use here for that reason, among others.
Several of the Angus sires we were using at that same time had 5 or 6 of the 6 tenderness gene markers identified by the GeneStar test.

CSI-BR,
I'd not then (or now) seen other Shorthorn breeders testing for  or making test results available to the public for the tenderness and marbling gene markers, so I wouldn't say that the Waukaru sires were poor, at all.
Waukaru Coppertop was the 'top of the heap' for genomic value at that time(IMO)... other Waukaru bulls available at that time had 2 of 6 tenderness gene markers and 0 of the 4 marbling gene markers... but no other breeders with AI sires in the ASA AI Sire catalog were displaying tenderness or marbling genomic test results.
