My First Calf is Here... w/ Pictures!

Here is my first new addition to the family. The pictures of him are when he was a day old, yesterday. Also, next time I breed the momma, I want to AI her. Any suggestions?? She is a reg. Angus.

Well, if you're wanting to keep the calf an Angus, there are a few bulls that would probably work on her.  At the top of the list, I would have Northern Improvement, followed by Lutton, and his son Lut.  If you don't like those for her, I would suggest maybe Juneau, or Saugatachee( I can't speel worth a crap sometimes).  If you wan't to go clubby, then maybe Manchild or Friction..I could give you a list of Shorthorn bulls that would work on her, but I'm guessing that you probably don't want to breeder her to a 'horn.

Congrats on the baby. I agree with Northern Improvement and if I could I would add Sav 8180 Traveler 004 to that list. He seems to be making some pretty fancy calves lately. I have also seen some nice show calves out of the TC bulls. I think the 1 I liked the most was out of TC Freedom.

What are you wanting to change about the cow? I would tell you to make a list of her "good" qualities and her "bad" qualities and then find a bull who could adjust he "bad" qualities without scarificing the good. Often times just breeding a popular bull to a random cow won't work. If you are wanting to go Reg. Angus, I think Ohlde Cattle Company ( http://www.ohldecattle.com ) is one of the finest. Look up their bulls OCC Legend 616L and Rito 9Q4 of 1H1 Sasquatch and I think you'll head in the right direction. Good Luck!

I love Legend, but with the amount of neck on the cow I would go Legend if you're looking for a show calf.  Are you looking Angus or cross? that makes a big difference on what would be suggested for her.  Congratulations

My thoughts exactly, but you beat me to it...I think that Legend is a VERY good bull for adding pounds and thickness, but it looks like this cow already has this. To me, Legend should be used on cows that are maybe a bit more "frail" made...I hate using that term, but it's close to what I mean.  The cows that are not as deep as you want, not as stout, but have exceptional structural qualities and an extended front end..Legend will stouten them up and throw a bunch of meat on them, with some style, but this cow here doesn't have enough of an extended front end.  I actually wouldn't be surprised if there were some Ohlde breeding in that cow...she looks a little bit like the cows that they like. Looks like an easy keeper that will be around for a while...good luck with whatever bull you decide to put back on her  (clapping)

I know very little about angus but I would have to agree with AAOK on Hot Rod. If you want to keep a MCF theme how about OCC Doctor. From what I know both of those bulls would pretty her up a bit without sacrificing her positive traits.

Ok, since you don't know which way you want to go, here is what I would do on my farm , if you are going Angus I like GCC Old School, he is a purebred but has a much cleaner front end than most of the OCC bulls or if you are looking for showy heifer types I like Money Man or Gigolo Joe on her for a Mainetainer calf, if you're looking for cowy types we are breeding our purebred Angus to Irish Whiskey, he is a pha carrier so you could get a carrier would be the downside on him.  If you are looking to breed clubby, I say breed Heat Wave, everyone else is in 2nd place.

Are those "Chicken Houses" in the background? If "so", who do the owners "grow" for (Tyson,Pilgrim's Pride, Cargill)?

Yes, they are chicken houses. I am not sure exactly who they grow for. I would assume Tyson, because that's who most people around here grow for.

Like the Momma Cow a lot also.  She's got lots of length and body depth.

I guess you need to decide how you want to go - clubby or not. The problem with clubby is that you have a 50% chance of having  a heifer - and many of the clubby heifers aren't worth a darn as cows

I guess my thought would be why add carrier genetics to your herd - why add the possibility of having a carrier (ie using Irish Whiskey) when there are tons of really great clean proven bulls out there?

If you are looking to go Maine - Calberta Black Impact is TH and PHA free with a really pretty front end that he passes on - his calves do pretty well in the show ring and make great cows; the Witch Doctor is also TH and PHA free and is almost a bovine tri athlete (good steers, females and bulls) - calves are pretty fancy.

There are sure a ton of options - I would suggest you figure out what you want and then decide how you would like to change your cow...and go from there  have fun and congrats again!!
