having live births are pretty common at our district and state fair.  That sounded like a mess!  Weird they couldnt get a cow in a secure area long enough to get her caught on a state fair grounds.

REALLY? were there no arenas or anything to shoo her into. what a mess. I know that there were 4H and FFA kids there why didnt they ask them to catch her? have they never heard of a lasso? Cattle get loose all the time at fairs if one cant be caught someone grabs a lasso and lassos it. or they could've brought out another cow or put out feed. next time they should let the pros handle it. this is sick and I hope the owner of the cow sues all involved it could've been handled way differently

But that is California, they can't do anything right - look at the numerous examples - now if that cow was loose at say Iowa or Ohio state fairs- very different result I would expect  ;)

I am not so sure Iowa, well Ames, IA, is any better.  At least the tranquilizers worked on this one. Remember this was at a vet hospital built to contain animals.  Operator error no doubt.

Its too bad that the dart gun at the CA State Fair failed.

Lincoln, Nebraska is no better, most of the steers at the animal science department that are on feeding trial are county fair steers and state fair steers, so pretty gentle, i remember a few years ago one got out  in the middle of the night and started grazing in some peoples yard north of East campus, police were called and animal control too, they attempted to herd the animal with lights and sirens to a chain linked yard, at this time one of my friend got a call of an crazy cow causing mayham and destruction, he roles out of bed ( like 3 am) and heads out to investigate, well by the time he got their the cops had shot the steer ( he was going to market in about 10 days ) . the police stated that the steer had attempted to harm them by ramming their police vehicles and posed a threat to other motorist..... the kicker is that he was in the grassy area the rodeo team rides horses at... and  this steer was used the 2 week before for the Block and Bridle showmanship contest. all someone needed to do was grab a bucket of feed and i bet he would have been caught.....

i wish any 4-H, FFA members, or anyone that has cattle experience to tell law enforcement how to control a situation with loose livestock, just close off the area and to not chase, police and official are idiots when it come to situations like this, and maybe this could have ended differently,  the dairy cow at California state fair probably would have been caught up  when she got  hungry/thirsty- JMO

We had a bull loose before for about an hour at our fair.  Used fence panels to finally corrall him, no tranquilizers.

Just wondering but was a necropsy really needed? I mean you just said you shot the cow, and now you need to figure out why she died?

Probably just making sure she didn't have anything infectious/dangerous.

Boy, someone had to go and post this and I had to read it.  This is one of my pet peeves.  To many times all of these people don't have one clue how to treat a domestic animal.  Idiots - all of them - even the idiot vet. <rock>

Any animal (unless it is an Iowa Deer that is hit by a car) is twice as valuable dead, as it ever would be alive... just think of the potential that heifer had... just think of the possibilities of the unborn calf. Yep, most valuable cow in California.

I guess it goes without saying that "Happy cows are NOT from Californial".

Sorry, but I would hold SOMEONE responsible.

Really?
We have calfscramble at our fair, and not to be mean, since I have no room to talk due to my steer last year, but the scramble steers aren't of best acting by the time fair comes around, and they get away quite a bit. The people who end up catching them in the end are the people who know how to work correctly with cattle, there was bound to be someone out there that knew how to catch one properly.
