I checked this calf out and I agree...pretty useful kind of young bull. I like the sire Beef King, and the numbers are pretty dang good. So then here's the question: Do you use the proven sire who made this calf you like, or do you opt for the next generation and use a completely unproven yearling bull you happened to really like? I think in this case it would be hard for me not to use this calf as a reason to use his sire...not necessarily him. But there's always something intriguing about the potential of that young bull, isn't there?

Actually, there are plenty of Simmental nowadays that happen to be extremely each calving. Some of those aren't the same bulls that are in the top of the breed for growth, but I think there are enough breeders who focus on that spread from birth to yearling that you can find bulls that will live up to that. Not all of the yearlings that start off with that spread end up there, though. A lot of them will either drift more toward calving ease and light birth weight, losing the expected performance, or they'll end up to have the performance and throw bigger birth weights than the early numbers predict. I don't keep up with a lot of the red bulls, but if I were looking for a good all-around type red Simmie, Beef King would be on my very short list along with the GW Redestined bull.

As far as the red gene, if you're referring to a heterozygous black bull having a "strong red gene", they're all the same. No heterozygous black bull is statistically more likely to produce red than any other heterozygous black bull. Maybe I misinterpreted what you meant by "strong red gene"... I'm not famiar with that Lifeline bull.

Be careful with Redestined, he has the spotting gene. I'm developing some bulls sired by him at my facility and they are really nice.

Oh really?... That's interesting. Good to know. Not that I was thinking about using any red bulls any time soon. But I like to know that kind of stuff.

From the dam's side, I'm guessing? 701T isn't a spotter, is he?

I'm almost certain it came from the dam's side.

Lifeline is the maine bull referred to as BK-Lifeline-although Mark Mueller raised him so I call him DMCC Lifeline-there have been ALOT of red calves out of him-he works great on Charolais-and I thought maybe shorthorn too-Still would like to track down the red calf mentioned-my guess is that hed be in North Dakota or Canada-or somewhere remote O0
