Hi there. I am a mom of a 14 year of girl in 4-H who wants to show a market steer. Its been 30 years since I showed a market steer in FFA and so much has changed. This last year she raised two very nice market lambs that finished 2nd and 3rd in their classes. We also show, breed and train reining horses so we are definitely animal savvy. My question is this: What is the real difference between a "Jackpot steer" and a "market steer"? Can someone show me pictures? I have been watching all the online sales and have talked to a couple different people. I seem to keep picking the high sellers in the online sales, so I think I have a pretty good eye, but not sure if I am picking what type. The fair my daughter plans to show in will be a late fair (early Sept). Also what weight range, month would be best. We have a decent budget to find a nice prospect. Oh and I also hear that there are now soundness issues in these steers. What doe I look for besides the obvious.
Thank you,
Sandy

Contact a reputable(yes, there really are some) Steer Jock, tell him your story, what you need and how much you can spend. Depending on your finances, your daughter may, or may not win the show, but you can be sure she will have a great project. My first choice would be Kirk Stierwalt, absolutely honest!
