Was the magazine the Shorthorn Country or perhaps one of our late 70's production sale catalogs (Wise Investment Production Sale)? My dad is looking but can't seem to remember where it would be.

Late 70's  black and white half page. The issue was thin.... kinda like the ones that come out today.  I will look again too.

Wiseguy,
My Dad had first pick of the George Slater heifers in 2006 and her 6th dam back is by the Haumont bull mentioned. He also told me the story (I think this right) that your grandfather took the train to Kansas City to see your Dad get his American Farmer degree and when he got there, there were no hotel rooms available, so he slept in a chair in a hotel lobby, but he did get to see the award presentation etc.

Yes that is a true story, but I believe it was both of my grandparents not just grandpa. It was a lot more difficult to get your American Degree in those days. Today as long as you meet the Money and Hour requirements you are in.  There are many stories on my grandpa Buck just like that, he was quite the character. If I remember correctly the reason he was against the purchase of 68' Par Cherry 71' was because he had just bought JAF Major 77 a Thornwood Major son, and wanted to breed all the cows to this bull. Par Cherry was originally purchased from Haumont's by Larry Reap and then sold to my dad.

My father (John Wise) and Ralph Pope owned a Par Defender grandson '68 PAR CHERRY '71 2 . We still have semen in the tank on him. Look him up on the ASA website he was one of the more popular bulls of this breeding and has over 130 registered progeny. As the story goes my dad purchased this bull against my grandfathers wishes with Ralph, it turned out to be a great investment though because each time for the next year that my dad visited Ralph he had a check for him. I like to remind him of this often when he shoots down my ideas.

If you guys want a lesson in linebreeding check out the pedigree of Cherry Magnet 6th on the ASA website.Go back about three generations where everything is either the Defender or sired by the Defender and then know that the Defender was the result of a 3/4 brother sister mating. Then realize that eveything in Wiseguy's bull's pedigree is stacked that way in every animal but Frekeba Majesty Edward and even there you will find some similarities if you go back far enough.

Looks even deeper with the cherry blossom female?  Looks like they wanted sultan the most.  Good grief.

Knabe, the first Cherry Blossom registered by the Haumonts was also a 3/4 brother sister mating almost identical to the Defender's pedigree.Try to wrap your head around that!

I think I remember hearing that the Haumont herd was linebred to Whitehall Sultan who was famous over 100 years ago.

My favorite Haumont Bull (that I've seen in pictures) has to be Defender Promise who was by Par Defender.  This guy looks thick.  Both bulls look good.  I'm going to try to add pics below.

was at Haumonts early October this year.. about 2weeks b4 Mary Belle passed away. She drove me aroudn to all the pastures and holdings and the 15miles back to tonw for lunch. I saw some very useful 2011 bull calves, 2 that were particular interesting , muscle and tops... some gnetics well worht looking at. Easy cavling , duders with fore and rear attachment, small teats, Dennis Hoffegge in Minnisota has some very intresting Haumont cattle topped with old  bull like Kenmar President 26a, Cruchan Leader...his prefix DMH

Whitehall Sultan's bloodlines dominated the show circuit for over 20 years in the early 1900's, sort of the Trump of his day. A lot of his most successful descendants were line bred. Avondale and Browndale were probably two of the most dominant. It is interesting see that linebred descendants are still available today through his polled offsping.

Interesting to read the blog, I have a few Haumont Shorthorns, my bull is line bred with Medowbrook Chieftain the 9th on the top and
Rosa's Command 91 on the bottom.  He is a easy fleshing bull for a for a Shorthorn.  I will be looking for another bull in a year or so.  Hard to
pay alot for a bull with a few cows.  Wondering if they would be any market for my bull.
