I purchased a Patent son from Waukaru's sale last year. Anyone have opinions on Patent?  I just started getting calves from my bull. Here is one of the heifers.

Calves look good.  I bought the lot 1 bull when I was there last year and I definitely remember seeing this bull.  As the sale was wrapping up, I wrote down some of the lots that didn't have bids and made my way back through the offering. I was really surprised this calf was on the list as I liked him as well as any of the Patent sons there-- he was much more moderate and softer made than the other Patents which, imo is what made him more appealing.  In general, I'd like to see more rib shape with the Patents and their offspring, but overall, I think you got a good bull.  He oughta inject above average growth and muscle expression into his calves without presenting the calving nightmares that commonly come with those traits.

When I called and told them what I was looking for, they gave me his lot number Along with about four other Bulls. They told me he was one of the youngest bulls in the sale so he might not be as popular as the older Bulls but they really liked him. He said had he been older they would have considered taking him to Denver.

The other Bulls they suggested were out of my price range and I didn't bid on him because of his age. The next day they called me and said he didn't get a bid but I should really consider him because he was as good if not better than the other Bulls that had suggested. Time will tell I guess.

Commercial herd here; mostly Angus/SimAngus, but some SHxAN cows.  Bred most of the high % Angus  & SH-X cows in the Spring herd to Patent last year... really liking the calves so far, but it's too early to tell if they're gonna be significantly different or better than calves sired by the other Waukaru sires we've used in the past (GoldMine, GoldCard, Coppertop, Orion). All the Patent calves born here this spring are black - except one gray steer, out of a diluted ANxSimAngus cow...so they don't look much like those roans & reds you've pictured.

I bought a patent son in 2014.  Calves were larger than expected at birth. 92 lb average but growth was great. My only real complaint was his attitude.  The patent x 464 cross works great.  I kept a son of my bull out of a bonanzaxjazz first calf heifer he had an actual ww of 718.

I have only had three so far. The heifers pictured were not big at all. The bull weight 89 lbs at birth.

I think you were given excellent, honest advice, look at the results you have achieved!
A pedigree breeder does not stay at the top of his game by trying to mislead his clients, if he says you are getting a good deal on the bull, you probably are!
The success of pedigree sales is on selling the next bull to the client, not the current one.
My only problem with the Waukaru programme is that they have no bulls for export with the major genetics companies, ABS, Semex or Select Sires. They are the only ones that export to South Africa. They have some amazing performance sires in their programme.
Better still is that they are all red!

The roan heifer reminds me of a roan Patent heifer I saw in a sale a year or two ago that I regret not buying. I happened to see her in a herd a few months ago and she turned into a really nice cow.

How does the ORIgen/ABS partnership work? Are they not able to get the Wakuru bulls to you through whatever their partnership is? I'm going to use some more of the Goldmine bull or a grandson of his I recently stumbled upon in the next few years.

I will investigate, thanks for the advice.
