Firewater, turton are two real good bulls I think would work phenomenally on that cow. As well as two young bulls that were prospects at Denver are game on and el padrino these calves will be hitting early spring. All four of these bulls would result in purebred chars.

Was able to attend the Charolais junior national show in Texarkana, Texas this year and all of the division winners as well as a couple reserve division winners were out of the Firewater bull, it was very impressive to me. I'm not the most knowledgable person on the Charolais breed, but if you're looking to produce calves for the show ring I would sure give him a thought.

How's your cow bred? If she isn't a firewater I would say go that direction and leave it at that, IMO he is the best and if your running Charolais without him (unless it's a deliberate outcross) your running behind

If she is firewater Id try anything that Maine event listed also possibly hoo made hoo (leddy) or wr wrangler (the heifer in my profile picture was a.ied to him last week)

As far as clubby, ever thought of trying bojo, or solid gold? (Yes he works on Charolais)

For a show steer I think a cool cross would be alta cedar perfect storm. I love those shorthorn char cross steers!

For clubby the safest bet would probably be monopoly again. Maybe man amoung boys or unstoppable.

Not to hijack this thread but what do you guys know about Lead On ( troubadours dad)? One of the best cross bred hfrs I saw sell last fall was out of him. I was just curious if anyone else had any input on him. I did a search on here and didn't get much info.

Mitch thomas owns him down here in Texas, I believe he sired the champion steer in Houston in 2006 and the steer failed the drug test or something along those lines

Underused but I'm thinking of using him in the future

I love how Eye Candy works on my high % Charolais cows.  He puts loads of bone and hair on them and my favorite thing is I haven't had any throw away calves.  No mouth, soundness, or any other problems with him.  I'm actually excited about raising club calves again.

The cow is out of MR Legacy P68 and her dam is out of SCR Majestic.

The guy that AIs our cows think she is to round in the hip to work with Firewater but I still want to try it, Her two calves that Ive gotten out of her have been good hipped so I think I'll give it a try

Mitch raised the bull.  Luensmann (sp) in the New Braunfels area owns him.  His family bred, raised and showed the Houston champ.  This is the first I've ever heard anything about that steer testing out.

I havent heard of any of the Houston Champs testing out ever, certainly not that calf.  It was real rare to get a good steer out of Lead On.  More common to get good replacement females.

Breed and flush her to Monopoly and make a lot more money than breeding to an inconsistent bull ......Monopoly or his relation breed very consistent ,one hot PB Charolais
bull is LT LEDGER an many powerful sons ..Looks like he is a calving ease bull with the extra growth also ,the Charolais people finely figured out with proper breeding they can have lower birth weight cattle with extreme growth just like the ANGUS cattle have done over the years ....

Firewater should work - just hope you get females. The males aren't half as good as the females in my opinion. I think Ledger will work too - his calves really impressed me so far. A lot more performance and power compared to Bluegrass. And he didn't sacrifice any ease of calving either.

Just remember everyone is using Firewater now. That means he works but also means there are lots around so the average ones aren't as easy to market. Don't be scared to try something new to try and get the next great one instead of doing what everyone else is doing. Be a leader not a follower. There are some interesting new bulls in Bovine Elite's line up.

Good luck - I like your cow.

dn91,

I would like to know what the EPDs are like on this cow, what needs improving, and where you plan on taking her.  Do you want replacement females for example? Bulls?  Other than that I concur with what Charguy says.  Firewater is good but plenty of them are out there now and quality on the bull calves is not consistent.  Bovine Elite has a  good selection of bulls that will put out calves with good EPDs, growth, and maternal traits Keys Allstate, Keys McHenry, Ledger, M6 New Standard etc.) .  The only thing Bovine elite is weak on is red factor bulls.
Besides the Firewater line the SVY Freedom line (Gerrard Montezuma is a son) has a history of raising show winners.  The Freedoms tend to have more hair and more milk than firewater calves. Beyond that Semex has some bulls that are different but will work as well.  I can't recommend a bull unless I know more about the cow.

I agree, I'm pulling around an awesome Unstoppable steer out of a purebred char cow (don't know the pedigree) but he's got great style and tons of hair. Cool colored too.

Good luck on whatever you decide.

She actually has poor epds that's one of the reason I have bred her clubby but she has raised a nice big calf since I've owned her, her actual numbers are as follows, BW -1.6, WW 11, YW 21, Milk -1. The dam of the cow according to the registration papers has even poorer numbers but this cows sire has pretty good numbers which helped her out some.

I know if I bred her to Firewater the resulting calf's numbers would probably be pretty poor but the calf would still be nice as a show heifer/bull so I'll eventually her to a Char bull with great numbers so I can keep the resulting heifers for cows  to start a small PB herd with.
