pregnant cow not calved yet
« on: June 05, 2012, 09:50:23 AM »
I have a cow that has had a bag started for over a month.   She should have been due May 19th with 2nd calf.   She has since been separated from the others since their babies were nursing on her.    Can this cause problems??     I AI'd her on Aug 11th of 2011  then was with the bull from Oct thru Dec.    Do you think maybe the bull got her but she has been bagging due to nursing babies???

I have been told by my vet that it can take their colostrum from there bag that the calf needs in it's first hours after birth cause I had a yearling heifer nurse on a cow of mine before she gave birth. So my vet recommended giving colostrum at birth just to be on the safe side and everything worked good for me. At a 283 day gestation table she would of been due May 21. I think she took from AI if she is bagged up, but is 2 weeks past. Has she lost her mucus plug or having any mucus discharge with swollen vulva? I just don't think she would be bagged up already if she took from the bull being in October, especially if she had dried up after being weaned from her last calf. Either way if she had been nursed on, I would give colostrum just after birth to be on the safe side.

If you are unsure of gestation and it sounds like it might be the case. It NEVER hurts to have your vet check the cow and palpate. I had one last year that went over 23 days and turned into night mare. We spend too much time and dollars waiting on babies. Spend the little bit extra for a vet trip to check your cow.

We have. Group of heifers this year that have bagged way more then we are used to......  Typically when the bag and teats get tight you know you are within a week or so.   We hada heifer carry a tight bag for six weeks.   My daughters heifer has bagged down to the point she looks like a four or five year old cow, still no baby and I am wondering what kid of udder she will have.....

no baby yet.   I did have AI date wrong as she was bred Sept 11 not Aug 11.    Vet checked her just about 3 weeks ago said there was a big calf in there thought maybe it should have come before July---nope.     As of the 5th she will be 2 wks over due.     Still waiting.....   As hot as it has been here the little bugger is probably baked in there.  lol!!!!!!

Well I had quiet a surprise over the weekend. I have three heifers left to calve. My sister ask me to show her which tag to watch for. They were bull bred. As I walked to the back barn and said well by gestation date their are no heifers due for 2-3 more weeks at least. SURPRISE- there were feet and a tongue. I jumped in and gave a little tug and the calf slipped right out. The heifer had not much of a bag but as she was cleaning and cleaning up the calf literally her bag filled and milk started running from her teats. I have never seen one fill right before my eyes. Nice bull calf. She's doing great for a first calf heifer. I hope it all turns out for you. Goodluck.

Do your due date on 40 weeks instead of 9 months...I had a different date that way.  Depends on cow...I had first tine heifer go 7 days over just fine...70# calf unassisted.

Rode with vet today...we went to pull a backwards calf from a prolapse cow that was a tank of a hereford...owner was shocked it wasc so small as was my boss, until he reached in and found calf 2...both were about 12 hours dead, so I'd check with a vet n have him come check her. Better safe than sorry
Just because I own the ugliest cow in the world doesn't mean I can't be proud as heck of her. It also doesn't change my love of the game when she gets last every time.
