Well I was working some calves today and notice a couple have ringworm. I know how to treat it but has anyone ever had it this early? Really seems like a odd time of the year to have it.
I weaned some early calves about a month ago and they got it too. I also had some fall babies get it early summer. The vet says because of a wet cool spring and not a real hot summer in our area it never went away. Ours seem to be getting it much worse than ever before also.
We have not had a wet anything this year. Some parts of Colorado have got rain, we have not. It has not been record breaking hot here except last week and some coming up but we were normal hot. I guess I would rather get it out of the way now as I don't think it will last long with the amount of hours of sun. There were I think 3 with spots, some were dead already and this one was on the face of a white headed heifer that I didn't see until I shaved it. I bet it wont last long now. Just seemed real weird this time of year, usually right before Denver for me.
Last year we had it during the summer when it was dry all summer and hot and sunny every day. Cattle under fans in the barn and in the cooler got it the worst since they were out of the sun, but even the calves and some of the cows on pasture had one or more half to 1 inch spots on them, which was surprising since hot, dry and sunny would not seem conducive to its presence. This year no ringworm anywhere so far. Maybe the flies help spread it. No idea why it was worse in a drought.
mine have got it twice this year, my replacement heifers got it in the spring, which happens every year around our place, and now I have a run of it again in my calves, which has not happened at this time of the year in the past
