How soon can you safely move cows that you A.I. I bring some cows home to Breed and then need to move them back to a pasture about 2 miles down the road. I only breed them one time then put them with the bull.  any thought?

I looked this up last summer for our breeding. I believe South Dakota State did a study on this. Within 4 days after AI it was fine to haul the cows(as easy as possible though). Days 4-60 is where they saw a loss of 10% of AI pregnancies. Once 60 days bred it became safer again to haul. So last year we followed those guidelines and our conception rates improved a little. Here is a link to the results.

I only haul by advice of my vet cattle that are 40 days or more  ultrasounded pregnant. 60 is even better. We all have that problem of getting cows A.I.'ed than try to get back to pasture. I do agree with moving them at 4 days or less post breeding but just try and keep stress to a minimum

I have always been told that you need to haul them within 12 hrs of breeding them or wait for like 3 weeks.

The way I understand it is that the embryo does not attach to the uterine wall until about day 10 or there abouts, so would haul the short way back to pasture within a couple of days.  Would not stress them from day 7 on to when the bull goes out.

I attended the "Applied Reproductive Strategies In Beef Cattle" conference last summer and one speaker covered this subject.  The following is taken from the conference proceedings book:  "Shipping between days 1-4 is best.  The emryo is still in the oviduct during this time; therefore, it is likely not subjected to uterine changes.  Also after day 45, the embryo is well established and fully attached with the placenta; therefore it is less suceptible to the changes resulting from stress.  Shipping at this point is less risky.  However, embryonic loss from shipping has been reported up to 60 days after insemination"

Like others have said, you are better off hauling or moving the cows sooner than later after AI. We have gone to all time breeding and we sort for pastures the same time and either trail or haul to pasture within 2 days. Takes us awhile to get them all moved.

Thanks for the info. My gut feeling was move right after before the embryo moved to the uterus. That's going to be my plan move the next day. Thanks again, and good fortune in your upcoming breeding season.
