Anyone got calves on ground from him? I have 4 from him and one to go I have heard good things but my experience is one C-section 102 lbs and 2 pulls in the 94 lb range one not pulled 88lb last one to go any day now. The calves are great looking and growing good I have 5 straws left and will use them up, maybe next year will be different I know there is more factors than just the bull when it comes to bw.

According to the ASA website, Yesterday has a - 1.7 BEPD.  I had a Rider 844 son with a negative 2 BEPD and I had a worse train wreck than you.  I've never had such big calves out of the same or similarly bred females even sired by bulls with a +5 BEPD.  In my opinion, personal experience and accuracies are way under emphasized.  Before somebody injects the idea that inaccurate EPDs are a Shorthorn problem, check out the post on a related thread from yesterday reporting that he used an Angus bull with tremendous BEPD, etc., and had the most problems ever.  My vet reported that the biggest calf they cut out this year, by far, was a registered Angus with "great EPDs."  My suggestion is that if you find something that works for calving ease, don't forget it!  My second suggestion is that EPDs are, in my opinion, just a small part of the overall picture.

Tamarak, what were the cows by?  This may be helpful if others have similarly bred cattle to know what may occur when they bred this way.  I am a bit surprised at this as my experience with two saskvalley bulls has been great.  Most of my cows are JPJ and have been selected for lower bw and ce as I only have time to check them 2 times a week during calving.  Also what were your feed conditions leading up to calving and were these heifers or cows?  Was the c-section because of size, shape or presentation?

I've been very interested in this bull, but I couldn't figure out how the double shot of Navajo fit into that BW epd.

What was the breeding on the cows side?

His dam had a 98lb bw and his dam's sire a 114lb bw.    It is not unreasonable to expect a bull to sire similar birth weights as those in his pedigree.

I'm no expert on how computers figure EPDs, but it is hard for me to understand how a bull with those kinds of birth weights that close in the pedigree could be - 1.7BEPD.  Don't get me wrong, I really like the bull and would use him if not for the bulls I have and 2 tanks full of semen.  I just don't totally understand how one of my bull calves has a 6.5 BEPD with several generations of 80-90 pound birth weights and this one has a - 1.7.  I know about all the numbers, formulas, etc., but it's still hard to comprehend and put a lot of faith into. I would agree that bulls tend to sire calves similar in most respects, including birth weights, to their close ancestors.

Epd's are easy to manipulate. Not saying that's the case here at all either. I think it skews the whole system if a few breeders use old high acc sires and make sure the calves out of the bull they want proven to beat the old high acc bull.

These heifers were off of cows that had a lot of Belmore Jackaroo and CP Grissom both good lines with average bw. Feed was average quality hay with no grain supplemented the C-section was just a big calf for a heifer ai on july 13 calved april 22 so calved right on the dates.

Well, EPD's are a "one more tool" for me. Not let it so serious as many people.
I like to look at birth weight bull against their BW EPD's.
A +3 BW EPD from a 28 kg BW bull is better than a -1,2 BW EPD from a 51 kg BW bull.
On this matter of "predictions", I only looks for animals right data, marbling data, fat cover, eye loin data.....all other that you must show confidence on data collect by people and pass for a machine that people can manipulate the results are secondary for me. Until now no wrong choices.
