Well my AI technician notified me that my semen came in today! However, I have a few questions on my cows/heifer coming into heat. The heifer was being ridden in a separate pen with a small steer like crazy last night! However she did not stand. I waited this morning and evening and he didn't ride her at all.. he just licked her and walked away? The other two cows are in a pasture with a total of five cows. One gave birth at the end of April so should she start coming back into heat? The other cow I haven't seen ridden since may....? Can cows who just gave birth a few days ago and a pregnant cow ride nonpregnant cows when the non's are in heat??

I would only concern myself when you see the heifer riding and he doesn't. If he won't put her in with the cows. Steers ride from time to time from what I have seen.  Also, if you have a near term cow, that is almost as good as a spotter bull. Their hormones seem to be in overdrive.

Both open and pregnant cows will ride cows that are in heat. Sometimes!... We have groups sometimes that ride like crazy, and we have some that don't seem to care at all, and they frustrate the crap out of me! Especially when the weather gets hot, it can be VERY difficult sometimes to catch cattle showing obvious signs of heat. The best time is VERY early...like just before daylight...or late evening/night time. With the steer and heifer, unless you had just put them together and he was "introducing" himself, I might tend to think she may have been coming in and just wasn't standing yet. You would HOPE to find her standing the next morning, but there could be reasons they were just over it by then. Are you using any heat detection aids at all? I would HIGHLY recommend that. The easiest & cheapest are either paint stick markers you can get at ag supply stores or just a can of bright colored spray paint from Walmart...paint the tail head of the cattle you're trying to catch in, and when they stand, it'll rub off.  I don't envy you...I HATE trying to get cows bred during the summer time.

Well I have the heaat detection pads so I will put them on the heifer and then on one cow. The other cow i'm AI actually was in standing heat when I went out to do the chores. She was being ridden and she just stood there and kind of hunched her back a little. I let my AI tech know and he is coming out tonight to AI her! Hopefully she will stick the first time. This will be her 4th calf from which her 3rd was born at the end of april (it was a nice looking heifer calf that came unassisted). She is being bred to either BIM or Walks Alone. She's a larger framed, powerful, lacks depth, simmy/angus female.

And surprisingly my dad was out of town so I got to do the whole thing by myself! (along with AI tech) :)
