Last year I decided persure my interest in cattle and have met many great people who have taught me a ton about the industry and in a way have taken me in as their own child. The only part Im having a hard time with is that nobody else in my family has an interest in cattle or agriculture in general and its starting to hit me pretty heavily. Has anybody else in SC dealt with anything like this before or have any tips for me on how to handle it?  ???

Im sorry  :(

I have been pretty lucky that my family has supported  my crazy cow intrests. The hard part is my boyfriend who was big in showing a few years ago and who has tought me alot, wants nothing to do with cattle anymore and is sick of the two he has left and wants to sell them. All I can say is if its something you really love then dont let others get you down. Have you tried shairing some intresting stuff with them? it might not get them excited about ag. but they might understand your passion a little better

Dozer45-
My boyfriend and I have been dating for almost 5 years. I told him for the very beginning that the cows are here to stay and I WILL choose them over him!!
FutureBreeder-
That is a very tough situation. All I can say is hang in there and if you love what you do, DON'T give up! My Mom and I run our cattle operation all by ourselves. There are days when I want to give up and sell them all, but in the end persistence will pay off. Good luck to you!

I was born into a town family. Both my parents were raised on farms but left because they did not like it. I always said I was born into the wrong family as I had uncles into cattle. Anyway I worked and saved and had a couple families that kinda adopted me and let me keep my stock at their place. I dont think my dad has ever seen me show a calf. My Mom came some. If you love it that much just do it. Save, work and do it. I found a man that had cattle and accepted mine, and we combined them. His interests are drifting away from the cattle at times but I will always have mine.

My family has a few head of commercial cattle, but just don't care for the show cattle Theyy haul me around because I love it, but I'm at odds with them on most purchases and have to butt heads about why it is beneficial to go to shows. My dad doesn't see the value in show cattle, and gives me a pretty hard time every time I try to accomplish something. I have had to pretty much do everything. I pay for everything, pick up everything, and get heat for wanting to purchase a new calf or try a new feed. He is dead set against beet pulp, fans, and traveling. I am fortunate though that they will take me to the shows; it just sometimes isn't a pleasant ride, so I can sympathize with you. If its something you love, just keep trudging forward and gates will open for you.  <cowboy>

i my self have been down that road that you are on now. i showed cows all through high school and wouldn't have traded it for anything in the world.  the starting of a farm was not easy. but if it was everybody would do it  i had the support of my parents but only through encouragements. i have walked into many loan offices and before they even knew my name they told me i was wasting my time. i didn't give up i got a job at a local feed store to help pay for my first 2 cows they were ugly as sin but i didn't care it was a starting point well i moved from there buying my first good looking cows and it was on from there i finally got my first cattle loan over a year ago for 11 Sim Angus cows  and as a birthday present i got the opportunity to go to AI school  now i lease around 400 acres for cows and hay and we are up to 20 brood cows all hope to have healthy caves the fall.  i have a good breeding program which consists of  fat and healthy cattle  hope to have some good show calves for next season as well.  and if you ever need any help feel free to pm me and i can try my best to help hope everything goes well and don't  ever give up    <beer>

None of my family were raising cattle when I started I mean back on my moms family farm they were feeding cattle out but nothing right on my parents acrage, it was hard to start with nothing and not really anyone to guide me, ive met alot of wonderful people who have takin me in and helped me which I am very thankful, my parents are very supportive thow, turning there 30 acres into a place for 20 cows and pretty much pushing there horses off to the side of it all, But i know where ur coming from! I was lucky enough to get a good start with the land they had, Looking back I wouldnt do it any diff! its great to see what ive done all on my own planning and brain storming with the help of ALOT of wonderful people ive met along the way. I was an 8th grade little rascal and went to ag class one day and decided im gonna buy me a bottle calf!! 7 years later I have 20 head of cattle and I dont plan on stoping there seem to pick up about 5 bred heifers a year to continue growing. Keep striving for what you want! If you want it bad enough youll get it!!
