I know its a sheep question  sorry...

I've been so proud of my kids (6 and 10) doing there chores 3 times a day with there animals.  I noticed the lamb wasn't gaining but eatting close to 5 pounds of feed a day.  I couldn't figure it out until yesterday.  They were using the same feed scoop for the lambs and the pigs.  COPPER YIKES!  Were lucky the lamb is even alive.  He's had runny stool for some time now.  I've explained to them why we cann't do it and chalk it up to a lesson learned the hard way (could have been worse).  Any ideas how to tighten this stool up?  We leave for state fair tomorrow and really would like to firm his stool up.

Thanks a heap!

Your poor kiddos must feel really bad, hard lesson to learn for them.  Try going on to MyLamb.com, my friend has show lambs and they have some really good "experts" on there that will give you a quick answer.  Good Luck, I hope everything works out and tell your kiddos not to to take it too hard!!  Lisa

THIS IS EXTRA LABEL USE......do not do this....wink.wink  ;)  Give them half of a child's dose of immodium.

Are you using drench or electrolytes?  If not, add some electrolytes to their water.  Sheep like the cherry flavor (horse stuff).  Good luck

Gidget - did you see the response to your post where it said to do a search on nutmeg.  I did the search on nutmeg and it looks like it might help, there were alot of people on there that have used it with success it looks like.  Lisa

Since it is extra label use and you're not a vet....wink, wink :) :) maybe they shouldn't do that....  ::) ;)

If the lamb has cooper toxicity and the liver is failing NOTHING will stop the diarrhea. Nor will anything reverse the poisoning.
Maybe a bigger concern is paylean. Was paylean in your hog feed? If so, and if your lamb is tested IT WILL BE DQ'd and your child might be kicked out of showing. Paylean is illegal in lambs, but legal in hogs. Just a thought.

As for making the stools more solid, if it was ME, I would pull all feed, and give GRASS hay. Do this today and tomorrow and it should firm up by tomorrow night. When is the actual show? Agree with electrolytes and the cherry flavor!

Tell your kids not to worry about it....everyone makes mistakes and as long as they learned a lesson, all will be well.

No paylean in the hog feed.  Vet said childrens immodium too.  He said to try the nutmeg and water drench too, said it wouldn't hurt.

He didn't get a whole lot of copper.  Just a little residue.  He's almost ready for market so hopefully we can get him to make it until then.  He's a happy little guy.  Vet said other than the shooting poop he looks incredibly healthy.  Just baled some nice grass hay...I'll do that tonite and tomorrow.  Show is Thursday.  Showmanship is Wed.

Vet said childrens immodium too.

Well, well.  I did say extra label and the vet did agree.  I know Gig and she knows me.  I would never give bad info on here.  My only mistake is that I did not PM her.

My apologies to all on the board.

so cowz, since you are prescribing drugs extra label in food animals do we assume that you are a veterinarian, that you have a valid client-patient veterinarian relationship with justme and the lamb, that there are no label alternatives and that you have provide written instructions for the use of this drug including a slaughter withdrawal based on what is known about the drugs distribution and metabolism in the species in question?

If Im not mistaken cowz also put something to the tune of "wink, wink". When I read this I smiled because I knew how it was meant. The poster asked a question and instead of criticizing someone who was nice enough to try why couldnt  we all give advice or stay out of it. Also I HIGHLY doubt that the childrens medicine has instructions for humans only so technically this would not be considered extra label
Lets try not to be so critical of people who are trying to help and maybe it won't be so tense on here.

We are raising food for human consumption - as such we should know the laws related to drug use in food animals. Clearly by your post, you don't understand what extra label drug use in food animals is. Maybe you should become informed on what extra label drug use is and what the requirements for its use are before spouting off - responsible producers know -

I have no idea what nutmeg does but according to the other board its the miracle poopy spice evidently.

We went from projectile poop to mashed potato poop....maybe its working.

I live in a VERY rural area and only store within 45 min. was Dollar General.  They had nutmeg and no immodium.  SO nutmeg has it.

Please the boards been really good let's not argue over something like this.
