I was out piddling around with my daughter's heifer this afternoon, leading her around & combing her & such.  All of the sudden, she threw her head up & started getting really agitated.  She was dancing around, flapping her tail, and breathing really hard.  I've only been messing with her for a few weeks or so, so I didn't know if she was just getting uneasy with something I was doing or what (I'm new at show calves).  Anyway, this went on for about 10 seconds or so, and she kept looking to the south.  I looked over there & a coyote was wandering up.  He got right to the edge of our pens, by the creep feeder (that used to be full of feed) before he finally noticed me standing there.  He was about 30 yards.  I used to always carry a rifle when I went out there.  I guess I'll have to start again.  He would've been toast if I'd had a gun.  :

Anyway..... thought it was kinda weird.  He was a rotten little scraggly sucker.  The wind was blowing nearly directly in his direction, so he must've had something wrong with him.  He didn't look mangy, but he was pretty skinny.

I would do the same.

Coyotes are bad in my neck of the woods,dairy guys can't even put calves in hutches anymore,need to put a bounty on them and get there numbers back down to reasonable levels.

its breeding season now, they should be easier to get

We had a problem couple years ago, barn cats were disappearing on a daily basis.  I borrowed a cd that plays the sound of a wounded rabbit, cranked it up in the truck, and setup from another vantage, waited, and waited some more and never was able to get him to come back around.

is there a bounty on pelts?

not even worth it to skin them out

Or you can go out in your truck park parallel to your barn and use a Dying Rabbit call, those things work like a charm, and pop him from your truck when he comes running.

We have had good luck using a challenge howl during breeding season.

I've lost at least two new-born calves to these suckers over the past few years.  I've been able to trap 4 of them, but the numbers are really climbing.  My neighbor has several hundred sheep and the coyotes are always lurking.  He finally had to get dogs that stay with the sheep 24/7.

A few years ago we were loosing calves to coyotes in 2 different pastures 6 miles apart. I declared war and started hanging snares in the paths under the fences. by the time calving season was over I has taken over 80 coyotes out of the gene pool. Now as soon as the frost kills the weeds I start working on the coyotes. Average probably 20 or less a year now. RW

several guys around here hunt them use dogs radios and trucks they keepthe numbers pretty well in check

We had over 300 calves killed in one 60 day calving season.. Killed nearly 200 hundred coyotes..We kept multiple people in the heifer pasture all night to keep watch and at least one person in every cow pasture. Finally got rid of them and have had no more problems.

If anyone gets a coyote problem, i will be available for hire. I love trapping and shooting them.
We dont have a coyote problem, alot of hunters around here and of course i do my fair share of coyote killin.
One cold winter we had a coyote come into the calving barn witht he cows in there and died in the corner. he was one of the mangiest dogs i have ever seen and so dang skinny, prolly forze to death my guess.

I trapped 2 this year on the place just south of where I spotted this one.  I knew good and well I didn't get them all though, because the last one I trapped had his partner with him & there were tracks everywhere around the coyote in the trap.  I had a triple trap set there, but only got hte one coyote.  Bummer.  I had 3 sets within about 40 yards, but only managed a single that day.  Frustrating. 

I have a foxpro caller and dearly love to call coyotes.  I imagine I'll take a stab at him this afternoon.  If I nail him, I'll post a pic.  Turkey season's getting close, and I nearly always pop a coyote or two coming into my decoys as well.  He'll go down....
