I think it depends on the judge but I think 1250 to 1350 ought to be good.  I like ours to weight about 1275.

It really all depends on the steer, different steers look better at different weights...for me a good moderate, average framed steer at 1250-1300 is ussually ideal, naturally gonna bring a smaller steer in a little lighter and a bigger framed steer a little heavier...I think to many people tend to get caught up in trying to get to a certain weight and forget to stop and think what weight their calf is gonna look best at...like I know some people that want everything to be around 1300 lbs, and they always ruin some good smaller framed steers because they take them to far past their prime or get them to fat...I always tell people I help to not be worried about which weight class they fall in, but to be worried about where their calf is going to look its best...as I have always said, and it really worked pretty well for me as a Jr all those yrs ago...Somebody has to win the lightweights, might as well be me.

Winners of the Iowa State Fair the last few years have all been around 1330-1350....
