Sullivan Supply is advertising a "slicker brush poodle card."  Its ad states the following:

"Great for finishing and separating cattle leg hair. Use as the final step after leg hair has been groomed with adhesive. The soft wires of the Poodle Card pluck the hair out and prevent the matted look. A great grooming tool."

So do you just use it like a scotch comb?  Or do you kind of pick at the hair to separate it?  Additionally, do you recommend it, or is it just a gimmick?  Thanks in advance for any help that you can give me.

no gimmick.  they work.  I would say the best way to figure them out would be to pull a leg and give them a go.  I am sure the sullivans ones are great, but you can pick up one at the pet store as well.  In fact, I havent been on Sullivans to even see them.  If I am thinking right, they are dog slicker brushes.  If they are not the same, sorry to mislead.

The best way to learn is to watch someone who uses one a lot.  I personally love them, and use the crap out of them on belly's and setting drive lines on legs.  It just gives it a smooth yet defined look, and a lot more natural than what a lot of people get with just a scotch comb.  Be sure to not use too much glue though!  I cannot stress enough how important it is to use the least amount of glue necessary when you fit.  If you use too much glue, the card won't help at all and you'll have a mess.

Found this trick out by accident last yr when I went straight from sheep show to steer show and had the brush still in my back pocket. They pull up and fluff hair like nothing else. I've found it especially helpful training legs. Stiffer bristles work better... Just like sheep and dogs. I found a really good one at the dollar store.

Thanks for all your help so far.  I have two more questions though.  First, if you use a poodle card, does that mean you don't use a scotch comb at all?  Second, do you use the poodle card on all four legs or just the hind legs?

Use the card as a finishing tool only.  Scotch combs are better for getting the hair up and to get your basic lines right.  You can use the card anywhere you use glue and it can be effective.  I use it on bellies, tailheads, and tops as well as legs.  I probably use it on the belly and back legs the most though, and tailheads if the hair is pretty coarse and doesnt want to separate.
