I have a couple cows that I want to breed to a smokey bull to try to get some smoke calves. My cows are purebred Angus. I like Tin Man, Milk Man but open to options. I tried Alias last year and got two calves that toed out bad up front.
Also, any bulls that will throw color on Angus cows? I got some Manchild in the tank, will he throw color on black cows?

Thanks! :)

best off using a pure Char for a smoke...  that way you'll be closer to 100% smoke, as compared to around 50.

go white shorthorn, and you should get about same odds for blues.

gerard montezuma makes great smoke calves on black cows.  Also lt bluegrass.  An absolute no miss is Wyoming Wind but he is 200 per straw so you probably don't want him for crossbred calves

well take it for what its worth:
Dont use manchild, he's all hair and looked like H at stud.
Unfortunetly your alias calves turned out the way they did. From what I have seen and heard alias works best on cows with a cripple front. Wierd yes.
As the poster above is correct with what you would get color wise. As far as tinman i have not seen enough of those calves to way judgement on him. Milkman seems to be decent from what i've seen. Interstate is pretty sweet but hes not powerful enough but would make them/keep them soft and soggy. As for the smoke/ buttercup monopoly sons, i dont even want to go there. Theres a whole lot of bulls to breed your angus cows clubby, but if your bound and determined to breed em smoke i guess milkman unless i am really missing another bull out there. as far as purebred chars well then there's seem real sweet ones. Madrid, firewater, and some real badass canadian bulls too

I second firewater, I don't know how in the world I left him out on my first post.  I would put him at the top of my list

Well I would third firewater, but on angus cows, I am not sure you will get enough hair if you are wanting to raise a show steer.  For making clubbies firewater needs to be used on THC type cows to get enough hair to compete in todays shows.  As far as Gerrard Montezuma.  He will make really nice feeder cattle for you, thats about it.  I own him, and know you wont get any show steers out of him.  I am gonna suggest Felony, he a 3/4 blood char, lots of hair, really stout, and I think gonna make the right kind.  I would stay away from madrid, might have some calving issues there. +2 points to HF chars, they are correct.
Also i guess if you can find it, there was a really awesome bull that won the canadian agribition.
or kris blacks website, troubador, yellow jacket seems to be all the rage but i dont think those would be stout enough on angus cows. wierd since he is a lifeline. isnt there a bull BK Sting or something i think he's a yellow jacket son.

Troubadour, milkman, or try alias again not every year they turn out the same there have been some super good alias but they have to be to a super sound cow and has worked best on purebred angus. I would stay away from tinman they seem to be a little bigger and everyone i have seen that was the right size was a tick straight on the rear. I also am not a fan of yellow jacket as I have yet to see one be soft enough for me everyone seems to be a tid bit tighter ribbed and have a more hollowed out appearance never could get one to feed right.

i second all of this, yellow jacket has all of the pieces in calves EXEPT they should have been going in the ring 15 years ago. with the way are constructed (this is a public opinion not just mine). . milkman may throw alot of black calves on black cows  ???. i like troubador the most. bought a calf out of him recently and seen alot of good ones out of angus cows

Remember though before sticking milkman in em, birthweights on him have been in the 160s before. I had a friend breed amerivans to him, only 1 of 8 lived and 6 cows died. But that one steer was champion american at ft worth.

Here is a pic of a smokey Troubador that was just cut and put in the barn last week.  If you like them with some extension in the front end I've seen a lot of his calves that way this year... we will see how they feed out? to be continued..
