CIDR questions
« on: June 23, 2016, 08:17:20 PM »
I synced a few cows about 2 weeks ago and when I pulled the cidrs I put them in a zip lock baggie but started working on something else and forgot to wash them off in case I wanted to re use them. My question is is it too late to wash them off for re use or not.  We never re used them before but I have read the replies about people re using them with a lot of success.  So since they have been in the baggie for the 2 weeks would it be ok to wash and re use or not.  Thanks for advice in advance.

You can still wash them - but don't use soap.  One of my theriogenologist friends indicated that soap will remove progesterone.
We just scrub 'em with a brush to get most material off - and since I have access to an autoclave, we autoclave them to cut down on vaginitis on that second use.   Therio guy says autoclaving actually 'brings more progesterone to the surface'.
We only reuse CIDRs once - and use OB lube with chlorhexidine mixed in for lubrication when inserting them.

Lucky_P, I always thought the progesterone was in a dehydrated gel form and in those grooves on either side of the CIDR! Am I understanding correctly that it is in fact impregnated into the plastic of the CIDR?
I have always thrown them away as I thought the progesterone would wash off, and figured that wasting a dose of semen, usually more expensive than a CIDR unless collected from your own bull, by being a scrooge on the cost of the CIDR, was economically stupid!

We always use them twice, and rarely wash them between use, aside from obviously soaking them in a hot Nolvasan or Iodine solution prior to inserting before each use. Haven't noticed a significant difference in conception rates between 1st and 2nd use.
