Spring breeding is just around the corner. I think it is exciting and enjoy the challenge of matching bulls to cows for AI. I know this may have been ask before, but, I was wondering if what folks are going to be using this spring breeding season. There are some new bulls on the market that look pretty good. Anyone taking a chance on them? If so, what ones and why?

We are going to use K-Kim Gold Count on quite a few females, as we did this year.  We are going to use Radioactive on the cows that are bred for steers/clubbie type shortie heifers.  Ali is a proven calving ease sire, so we will use him on our Maine-influenced Appendix heifers, and even on a couple purebreds.  I think we will breed a few cows to Jake's Proud Jazz to see if he will click with our herd.  We are definately going to try Salute on our more mature cows that can handle a larger calf because we have heard some pretty good reports on calf quality and some not so good reports on BW.  Our herd is Trump/Waukaru/Jordan Acres based with a sprinkling of some Maines/Appendix. I would like to know what other Shorthorn breeders are going to be using.  8)

We are going to use a lot of Money Man this year. Also have already bred a cow to Hard Core. I'm planning on using Triple X on my Foreplay tank of a cow. Also will probalby use either Rowe's Broadband or Currancy again depending on which calves I like better.
I might use Red Vision on my red & white Warhorse cow since he is clean.
I'm looking more at easy BW bulls this year. Would like to get my average down from 92 pounds to closer to 90.

I am going for females with my Spring breeding.  I plan to use Hummer on my heifers.  On smaller cows I will use an Energizer son, 258127.  On mid size cows I will use Nike and Ali.  On large cows I will Elmo.  On my PB Maines I will use Bouncer.  A new bull that we might try if we get semen in time is ELE Ransom.

In the Fall we plan to use Hard Core, Oklahoma Storm, Icy Hot and for heifers use Hummer and Elmo.

OH Breeder, I think you will like the Proud Jazz calves. He should be used on bigger framed cows or heifers. He will downsize a score or so , and add muscle & style. The white steer in my profile is out of Proud Jazz.

I think I am going to try him. I have a larger framed Rodeo Drive that he might just work on. Long necked large framed cow. First calf out of her as a heifer and Sin City was 115#'s. He went on to be 54" and >1400#'s. So, I am always trying to looking to downsize her.
I am really liking my Gizmo heifer. Her disposition is the best I have ever had. Her mother is an ex show heifer. WHen I go into feed and bed, they follow you like a couple of dogs. They lean on you til you pet them. SHe is turning out to be quiet the fancy lady.
I have a Strictly Business heifer bred to Chill Factor. SHe is really large framed and hope she will be alright.
Am going to breed my WMW cow to Dream On or 3 C Macho, haven't decided for sure.
I have three other shorthorns, thinking final solution on them. THey are all second and third calvers.
Struggling on what to put back on my Mossy Oak heifer. SHe threw a really fancy bull calf about 65#'s out of NOrthern Improvement. Not a problem with calving. But not sure.
My low percent maines and my XX's will probably use Heat Wave on one or two. Sin City on others.I also have had some GREAT luck with egg buying this year. I have 9 to put in.
Shortdawg, have you ever seen the Quantam Queen cows. Really excited I have 4 eggs from same cow family as the cow pictured.

I think it is interesting to see what everyone is using. Joe Boy, those are some diff. sires.interesting.

No , I haven't seen any of the Quantum Queen cows. What's the pedigree? I really like the female in the picture ; she should make a nice cow. I've heard nothing but good things about 3 C Macho. I used him on a couple of EXT influenced Angus females in my herd. They will calve in Sept. A guy about 3 hrs from me is one of the owners. A Sin City won breed Champion Heifer at our State Show this year. I used Tonic and a Trump son I sold my neighbor on my shorthorns this past fall. Also flushed a cow to Primo & Sonny then bred her to Salute. I put in a couple of the low grade Sonny's and stuck one of those for a Sept. calf.

I'm using Money Man and a chi bull suggested by Major's called Success.  The rest I'm not sure.  Probably some Hard Core I've had good luck with him so far this year.  To be honest, this is the first year I haven't found a "new" bull that tricked my trigger.  Kinda disappointing so far.  I always find one that I'm gah gah over.

I'm in the midst of trying to decide what bulls to use this year and I am still working on that, but I thought I would contribute what is going to go into my decisions rather than specific bull names.  1.  I will be buying semen from bulls who I think will work with my cows.  I have good cows and I think there are a lot of good choices out there for them.  2.  I will be buying semen from owners that I respect!  There are too many good bulls out there with honest and moral owners for me to want to support the owners who engage in sleazy or deceptive advertising and a buyer beware attitude!  3.  I will support SEK Genetic Horizons by buying the semen that I can buy from them as much as possible.  Dr. Coover has stepped up twice now and gotten bulls tested and results out to us when no one else seemed much interested in doing so.  So I'll buy what I can from SEK.  4.  I will NOT support breeders that I feel have been detrimental to my breed in the past  - I do not care how great such and such "Clean Bull"  (great son of Dirty Bull) is - if that breeder wasn't ethical before he probably still isn't now!  I will choose to remember the past and give my money to the folks that are trying to improve the breed while making a living, not the ones making a buck at any cost. JMO.

I don't have Shorthorns but if I did I would sure look at SS Deadwood.  I think what Schrags are doing is terrific!

I'm with you Gyspy 100%.
A few bulls I am tossing into the mix is: SS Deadwood (I think he is a good bull- plus I like Shrags!  (clapping)
OCC Legend, TC Freedom, Dr.Who, Hannibal, TC Grid Topper.
And my herd bull, which so far, has thrown just as good, or better calves than all my AI bulls!!!! ;D

I will not buy from "call me for more info" breeders. I will not buy from "I don't have the results yet" people.

I will support SEK.....everytime I have called with questions they have bent over backwards to help, not to mention their wonderful testing/reporting process!!!! GOTTA LOVE IT!!! (clapping) (clapping) (clapping) (clapping)

Gypsy as someone who has had first hands on experience w/ PHA, I'm sure you could write a book.  Not only were you instrumental in getting the word out that there was a problem, you dealt w/ it honestly. I know you've had a rough go of it w/ PHA & still are seeing some problems even this year.
Thanks for the input!

We flushed her to Dr. Who in Jan., Heat Wave in Mar. and Money Man is the plan for live transfer in May.
We had a flush on the Dice cow to Vegas and ended up with 4 really nice Maintainer/Appendix Shorthorn heifers, one of them we flushed to Radio Active last year and ended up with some great calves out of him, but they are a little straight so I thought we'd try Proud Jazz on them (the Vegas cows).  I really liked the picture of the bull and he has the depth that these are needing, so he may work, time will tell.
