We recently(mid March) sold a steer who was green broke. He was fine, just needed some work to be show ready. Once at his new home, he began charging the girl and her parents. They say it is very bad. I advised tying all day and lead to feed, water. This worked for a small time but then the steer continues charging. He is OK on the lead at some times but pulls at others. He then pulled away from the girl and charged her. They say he worsens with discipline. So I said bring him to me. Once at my house he was perfect. Led well, set up, calm, submissive, easy to deal with. Acts better than some of our show string. At their house he won't eat with them there, here he let's you stand right next to the trough and is fine.

He is the only cow at their house but they have horses in the pen next to him. He has a small run in which he stays. Its small. (Maybe he's bored and taking it out on them?) This is a good family on their 4th year. They work their tail off, so its not from a lack of effort.

Any thoughts on why he is so different? The girl is now scared of him and rightly so, but he is a very nice calf and they want to keep him. Any suggestions? Another calf as a buddy is out, but they are working on a larger pen. Thanks!!

take anyone out in your pasture and have them walk up to your cattle.

it doesn't take much time to teach the animal to get out of gear.

then, when you sell them, they have a familiar way of handling they are used to.

i get a little uncomfortable when i get dropped off in the middle of nowhere.

If the calf won't eat with them around I'd suggest pulling out the feed till he gets hungry enough to eat out of the new owners hand. It might be a day or two but I'd bet it would help tremendously

Since the girl is afraid of him, this might be a tough battle. I have no doubts that the steer senses her fear and now is going to take full advantage of it.
Bring the family to your house, and have the girl work with him.  First, with you standing next to her. After that is a success, you need to get out of view and let the girl work with the steer.  This might require the family to stay with you or in a hotel for a weekend, but might be worth it in the end.

For whatever reason, this steer has figured out he can get away with charging with the girl and not you. I am guessing it is a game to him and the girl can not get his respect.

Hope it works out for everyone, but remember nothing is worth getting injured over. NOTHING.

Thanks guys. We will try both suggestions and hopefully she can gain his trust and respect....Knabe, remind me not to be around if you are ever dropped off in the middle of nowhere, if you act like this calf is accused, I do not want to be present!  ;)
