These are my 2009-2010 steers, what do you think.. Two are on a holding diet, and the blonde steer is on full feed.
The first steer is a Limousin/Angus born 9/26 (rear pic also)
The second steer is a GF Kadabra out of a Maine Angus cow (rear pic Also)
The third is a Charolais/Brahman

They look like they are on diets. Feed them!!! and when they eat all of that Feed them some more!!!  You have to get them there first. Too many people worry too often about getting one to heavy too fast. Get them there first, then you can pull or coast at the end. Its much much easier to take it off than it is to put it on.

The first two haven't gotten to the first weigh in,(its in October) which they need to weigh about 650-700lbs. If I new a good way to shrink them I would get them up to weight... The blonde steer has recently been started on feed. He has just come off of a range down south where he was on his mama and pasture.
Thanks,
HT

Not sure what to say but you asked. I think you may want to raise your standards on steer quality. The Charlois steer has some real issues.

Sorry!

are they going to be disqualified if they weigh over 700 in october?  if not, then i would feed them, no diets...like the others said...its easier to take it off than put it on...especially if its really hot around your fair time...if you end up being 100-150 lbs over(850max) at checkin, i dont really think that would be that big of a deal, you can work with that through lots of exercise and changing a feed ration a few weeks before fair time if you are still in that situation...but if you are anymore than that over, you might need to reconsider the age of your calves and possibly getting one a little bit younger...just a suggestion....

The Charolais steer is not bred or meant to be a "show Steer" He was bred by commercial cattlemen down south for carcass performance. He has just came off of a BIG ranch.. He is a range steer that you have to take back down there later and show.. I am feeding him all he can eat, and doesn't care for feed. Either one I bought for him.. He would rather eat grass and hay all day long then come up to get a bunch of grain.. Its how he was raised. he was out on pasture with his mama until about a month and a half ago.. You cant go out and pick a state fair calf here. You get what you get from them. That's what makes it a good learning projet.
Thanks

Can you educate us on how the Florida State Fair steer show is run?  Are all of the steers provided for the participants?  Who provides them?  What is the system used to determine who gets a steer and what steer they get?  Are there certain weights that they cannot be over/under at the weigh in?  Certain rate of gains that must be met?  Not picking on Florida, it just sounds very different than how it is done in the midwest.

For the state steer program in Florida, they get the steers from commercial cattlemen in FL, so about 98% of them are Brahman influenced, because that's what survives the best here under those conditions. Some of the calves have only seen people a couple of times in their life before the exhibitor gets them. Basically you get assigned to a pen, there are 8 or so pens. And what you get is what you get. You can choose your top 3 in the pen and if your first three go, then you go to a redraw pen where everything no one wanted goes and that's where you get your calf. Your calf has to gain I think at least 2 or 2.5 lbs/day and as long as your calf weighs over 975lbs (that's the lowest) there is no Max i don't think. I think they do it this way because everyone is on a level playing field, and it also supports the Florida cattlemen. Its a very fun project when you do it this way.

Thanks for the info.  Is there a selection commitee that picks the steers or do the breeders pick which ones they send?

I would rather eat your steer than my fuzzy hamburger any day, I put my show steer from last year in my freezer and god bless him I love him and he lead us to 5 supreme and 2 res. supreme champ but he had no taste what so ever. In the end if you like your project then what others think does not matter, you have to deal with them from day to day, raise what you like.  Oh and as far as my show steer this year, I would not sell him to one of my meat buyers hes going to end up at the sale barn after we are threw.
