We have a 4 month old steer that will be going to the fair in a month. Everytime, we enter the pen to tie them up, they seem to get nervous and then have a bowel movement. Is it common for a calve to do that everytime?

Also, how long do you normally feed a medicated/weaning feed?

Thank you

We've had steers do that everytime they hit the wash rack, from 600 lbs to 1350 lbs everytime they got in the wash rack "splat".

They do that every time they stand up after laying down for a while.  A guy who used to feed cattle said he used to run hogs in with the steers to get better utilization of all of the feed stuffs.  The pigs figured out that every time a steer stood up after laying down for a couple of hours the steer made a fresh pie.  The pigs would keep track of which steers had been laying down for a couple of hours and go get the steer up so they could get the good fresh stuff.

Didn't have much to do with your question, but was interesting anyway.  <cowboy>

On feeding medicated feed, I have feed aureomycin medicated feed to weaners for a couple of weeks after weaning to combat the pneumonia issues.  Probably better to vaccinate with 7-way about 10 days before weaning.
