We are really pleased with how this set of bulls has developed despite one of the coldest winters in recent history. I find it most interesting that they were fed a high roughage ration, that was designed by a feed nutritionist, so that the bulls would gain close to 3 lb/ day. This group averaged 3.41 lb/ day during the test period, with several days of temperatures below -40 F with the wind chill. There were 62 Shorthorn bulls on test and 72 Angus bulls in the next pen. The Shorthorn bulls gained over .2 lb per day more on average, on approximately 10% less feed. The Shorthorn bulls have tremendous carcass data, in fact, the technician said they were one of the best sets of data collected from hundreds of bulls of several different breeds. These bulls are thick soggy lean machines that were developed for optimum growth rather than maximum growth.
