Hi,
We have two steers that we are taking to the Badger Kick off in Milwaukee in Dec. We have them on a mixture of 60% Cracked Corn, 40% Oats w/ some Protein (Calf Manna).
Wondering what supplement or feed adds muscle. Does Showbloom or Oxy-gen or anything like that work? They are tied up during the day and outside in a large pen at night to get exercise.

The amount of muscle is genetic.  Steroids will affect the development of said muscle.  Don't try it!  My first recommendation would be to introduce more fiber into your ration with about 20% cottonseed hulls or shredded Beet pulp to "Blow Out" your calves.  Cut that 20% in Oats.  As a supplement, first you say nothing about a mineral pack, only the Calf Manna.  Add 2 oz/day/calf of a good mineral - Vita-Ferm, ADM or Vigortone. Once you have made these changes to your ration, top dress about 1 lb/day/hd Stabilized Rice Bran.  I like Moormans/ADM Healthy Glo.  It will produce a natual occuring Steroid that will stimulate muscle growth.  It will also do wonders with the quality of your calves hair.  That ought to be worth a + Karma point!

Purina makes High Octane Champion Drive that promotes muscles.  We will be using it for the first time this year.  It came highly recommended to us by someone that has done quite well with steers and heifers.

AAOK,
How far out from the show would you typically start feeding the Stab. Rice Bran?

We actually did use it last year but I could not remember the name.  We have also used the Power Fuel by purina to add finish.  I think you will be quite satified with the result.

optiflex or show flex are two options.

The rice bran is very interesting, is there a negative effect feeding a little of it throughout?

We fed stabiliized rice bran last year in place of steam flaked corn at the end.  Everyone was amazed at how quick the steer put on the finish and how smooth he was.  I'll use it again this year, just don't remember how close to the show we started feeding.

As with any feed, use it every day, and judge how it has worked after about 30 Days.  I preach all the time......make what ever you do with cattle ROUTINE!!!

Moormans is a horse feed. I don't think it is the rice bran that does it...its everything else in it that does it. Omega3, Omega 6 vitamin E, yeast, soy hulls, minerals, gr corn, oats, soy meal.  14% protein, 12% fiber, 12% fat. Sounds pretty close to what everyone else already uses except for the fat. Fat I suppose is for the energy. Eat fat put on fat unless they burn it.

The "proof" can be explained by an ADM nutritionist.  This is a Horse additive, but it is also the best Fat additive you will ever use.

HEALTHY GLO Meal
Features:
Provides concentrated nutrition--25% fat (rice & flax oil)
  Contains 1000 IU/lb natural source vitamin E
  Healthful B-complex vitamins
  Balance Calcium Phosphorus ratio
  No Preservatives

We fed the Natural -glo Stabilized Rice Bran for the past 3 years, lays down a nice finish, helps the hair, is a plant based fat that the animals can digest. We fed a pound a feeding twice a day, for the last 90 days. I think it is better than alto of the other (super supplements) at less than half the cost.
