How do u kill a tail with lidocane???? Or alchol whats the difference someone told me like everclear or something will kill it for good??? and lidocane just for a few hours

CAUTION -- unless you are familiar with epidural procedures, PLEASE do not go poking around up there unless you are ready to have one fall over flat on thier belly some times. Seriously, an epidural is a good tihng IF used right, and I personally do not think that using it just so an animal will not swish it';s tail in front of the judge is one of the best uses!

I won't go into great details here, but stay away from Alcohol and your mentioned Everclear -- you may not have a walking animal after wards. Lidocaine will be - at least -- a temporary fix, but still -- not for the best reason. Procede with caution is my advice, at the very least, have some one VERY experienced with you. Nuf said

Come on now... If you have to ask, it means you don't know enough to be sticking foreign objects into the spinal column (central nervous system) of your prized animal- heck any animal with a spinal column.

That's the best I can word it.

You can put a zip tie on their tail. About 6 inches from their tailhead, snug but not too tight. A lot more humane.

A zip tie more humane? Are you joking? Your joking right? If you think that is correct, I would suggest you put a zip tie around your finger, or another long type appendage and put it on "snug, but not too tight" and then see how that works for you.

Why not just work with the animal enough until it is calm enough not to swish its tail? Sounds like you are looking for the quick easy way to solve a problem. Try a little work... might do wonders.

I agree with show heifer, and I understand that they get agitated even if they're dog-broke but if clipping is your problem, get someone to hold the tail for you. And if in the ring is your problem, try calf calm, I often call it useless but it'll knock the "edge" off and help with the nerves of the calf, and therefore you. I often give calf calm to clip just for the extra few seconds of a calf standing still. jmho

Have you tried asking the calf real politely to "please stop swishing your tail?" Try this and let me know how it works. Very interested.

we have used the zip tie before..Its hard to tell if your animal is going to be nervous in the ring, especially if you only show your animal once.. We only keep it on for a couple of hours and take it off right after were done showing.

I have by golly... by working with the calf for hours, until the calf was comfortable and trusting! It worked! Imagine that!! <party>

My heifer this year was the worst tail-swisher in the history of my show career. She was worked with many many hours a day, everyday, for 10 months straight, and was treated very nicely. Sometimes they're just gonna be a little more high-strung. That same heifer almost got away from me in the show ring at the state fair, but would be perfectly behaved any other time. She sure was something else......never kicked or anything though, and definitely not mean, just kind of not all there I guess haha.

I personally have been involved in this industry for almost 20 yrs...I know lots of people who use all these methods...and I understand we all want our animals to stand still and look pretty...but lets get serious...have you ever seen a calf excused from a ring for swishing its tail...have you ever heard a judge say...well this one would have been our winner today but he just wouldnt keep that tail still? a good calf is a good calf, whether it swishes its tail or not...and as far as the drugs go...please be aware that in most states not only is it illegal in the shows eye to give lidocaine or like substances to numbe the tail, it is also criminally illegal to do so without a medical reason for doing it.
this ranks right up there with the politics in the show ring for me...I think its sad that I have been called to judge shows and then never invited back because I dont really give a hoot who bred a calf, who its dam or sire is, who fed it, who fit it, who led it, who hauled it, who saw a pic of it once, who its named after or any of the other crap so many get caught up in...the best calf is gonna win even if its tail is moving like a wall fan the entire time

I'm with Olson on this one. Sometimes you have one who is always a little nervous in the washrack, grooming chute, or in the ring. NO matter how much they have been worked with. You can't make one not swish it's tail by working with it more. Sometimes maybe, always never.

I had an EXT hfr last year that swished her tail all the time in the grooming chute and in the showring. She wasn't crazy, but was nervous. She would squirt a little crap cause she was nervous then swish her tail. Her butt looked like a nasty windshield that just smeared bug guts every where. It was a bad deal, but we just held her tail in the grooming chute. Then she usually got over her nervous squirts. Then her tail just swished everywhere in the ring. If the ring was small with people close to the edges it was worse. Larger rings where people weren't right on top of her, then she was usually fine. Never gave her anything or ziptied her tail, but sure thought about it somedays when her tail looked like a fan. I just never thought it was necesary. Just had to work around it best you could.

well I am actually from Louisiana, moved to Minnesota 5 yrs ago and managed a big farm there...just moved to Texas in February to finish my degree at SFASU where I am on the show team and one of the student managers at the research farm...trying to get my name back out there as a judge...but people dont tend to like my non-political view...I know all the games and I amfamiliar with the good sires and cow families and the big names in the industry...but in a show I never look at an animals pedigree...I judge them for what they are!

So a tail swishes a little bit? big deal your showing a live animal, A moving tail shouldnt distract from the quality of your animal. I could see where tying a tail if your taking pictures but not for a show. Another thought is after this animals show carrer they will either be a momma out in the feilds or supper. I like my cows to be able to move their tails to swat flies.

Is this a serious question?
I guess I would have to ask who told you about it or did you just hear about it? I am not sure why you would want to inject any forgein substance in an animal seeing how you are not a vet and do not know how the animal may react. I would say work with the calf more and as many have said prior they are cattle they are going to swish their tails.
The zip tie on a tail if applied right does not hurt them one bit. Small amount of pressure is all you have to apply. No one said you have to cut the circulation off. If you are only putting it on to show and groom a couple of hours is not going to cause his tail to fall off.
