Has anyone kept track of what percentage you get when you AI with heat detection versus timed AI within the same herd?

If I ususally get 70% conception with heat detection, what percent might I expect from timed AI?

If you get exceptional conception with timed AI, what exactly do you do to accomplish it?

Just thinking of trying to simplify my life this spring!

We did timed AI for the first several years we started and the last three have basically heat detected the first day then bred everything else the evening.  The worst conception we ever saw with timed AI (on first calf heifers bred back for their second calf) was right at 50%.  We typically see 60-70% conception by breeding over a 48 hour period vs. one time breeding.

SH why not cidr the cows and breed off observed standing heats for a time period, say up to 72hours, then TAI anything that hasn't stood up to that point. That way you can manage your time and cows better to suit your schedule.

CAB - that is great advice

essentialy that is what we do to, pull CIDR and watch for heat and breed off heats till the timed AI window. We also do this with our reciepts. record the ones that come in good heat and a week later put embryos in them. the ones that didn't fire then will be timed AI and an injection of GnRH usually with some cheaper semen in case of bad heat/ infertle heat.

Limited labor force has caused my dad to use time AI on his heifers and he got 25/ 58, which was about right, maybe a little low, just because he wanted it to be easy, so if you time AI on heifers, be happy with 50%

We have been getting 65-73% on TAI with the cows. 5 yrs ago was the first time we used TAI. Before that we heat detected with a couple gomer bulls and would run 70-88%. We use TAI on our hfrs just because of the time factor, but like mentioned before, expect 50-60. We have went to only AIing the hfrs one time with no clean up bull and don't have enough data yet, butit seems as though the this has increased our fertility, which in turn as increased out cow TAI. It will be interesting to see when we get a few more years.
