Recently I have had several inquiries by PM on SP as well as emails and phone calls regarding when Touchdown and/or Major Leroy semen will be available. I thought I would post an update as to where they are at:
Touchdown is presently at Genex Hawkeye West, Billings, Montana and we have semen available in the US now. We should have semen from him in Canada in early March. Touchdown has already been used in flushes in a couple of major league donors in the US so that excites us. I will know much more in a couple weeks in regards to his calving ease, but it certainly looks like he is going to be a calving ease sire. The heaviest calf last year was 85 lbs from a Salute daughter. We have two so far this spring and both were under 85 lbs as well. I expect we will eventually see a few bigger BWs, but right now, he is looking like a bull that can be safely used on cows or heifers. I am really pleased with the uniformity of his calves .
Right now we are considering producing some sexed semen. There has been some interest, and we will have to decide soon when we see how much interest there is. For ourselves, we are not really interested in using sexed semen as we want both bulls and heifers. So far we have not had a horned calf from Touchdown and they are very vigourous at birth. For semen contact myself or Shady Lane .
Major Leroy is presently at Alta Genetics, Balzac, AB. We have semen available in Canada and we should have US qualified semen in mid March. I have told Alta to have the export paperwork completed when he freezes US qualified semen so that we can get it into the US. Leroy is now 9 years old, and I don't think the interest in him has ever been higher than it is right now. A couple of US breeders have said they plan to breed their entire cow herds to him. I get asked regularly if Leroy can be used on heifers. I hesitate to recommend him for use on heifers as I think there are much better choices. I know some people have used him on heifers with no major problems, but I have never used him on heifers myself. I think I would sleep much better at night if my heifers were bred to a better choice of sire. On cows that have calved at least once, we have not had any major problems, however, I have heard of a couple bigger BW calves. This may be the last chance to get Leroy semen, as I mentioned earlier, he is now 9 yrs old and we don't know how much longer he will be active. Right now, he looks like he will last several more years as he moves like a cat and he acts like a 2 year old.... but the reality remains,.,. he is 9 years old.
We are taking semen orders now on both bulls and it will be sent out in the order they arrive. We have also instructed that we don't want the semen put into straws unless it is very high quality. Both b ulls are priced at $30/ straw ( multipes of 5) and $20/certificate.
