I'm curious as to what color patterns you all are getting on your Durham Reds.  Ours have mostly been "skunks", dark red with white bellies & sometimes little roan patches on the tail & head.

I used NEO-SHO Millenium on darker-colored, slick-haired (during summer. Mine had the same hair as Canadian cows during winter) Shorthorn cows. Every one was solid red, with only one being orangey, Red Angus red. They were almost as deep a shade of red as my Shorthorns were.

We are using a solid red durham red bull and for the most part our calves have been red.  We have one roan out of a roan cow and one with some white marks out of a spotted cow.  Our birth wieghts on hiefers have ranged from 61# to 84#.  We have only had 9 so I do not believe it to be a good test.  We will get about 20 this fall.  Thus far I have really liked mine.  The one thing I have notice is the vigor of the calves.  They barely hit the ground and they are up going.  Had one last weekend that beat her mother up.

We had one f1 durhham red calf(white cow x red angus) that was a wierd roan...like a blue roan only orangy. Ive had about 35 f1 durham reds in two years. Most all were pretty much all red. Some are orangy...some are dark cherry red. I guess it's the next generation that worries me. A durham red xdurham red. I wonder if more color might show up. You could get horns. Tough selection is the key. It would be nice to start with a homozygous polled, solid red shorthorn cow in the initial cross. :)

I will be able to tell you more by next year this time. I am implanting 20  embryos next week that are sired by Mulberry and two of our solid red Shorthorn donors. Both cows are dark red and  Mulberry is darker than some other Red Angus sires. I will be very disappointed if these calves are not a " darker" shade of red. One of the donors is also the dam of our top selling bull in our recent Sun Country Bull sale at $20,000. She has now generated over $50,000 in sales of offspring and embryos, in the last 15 months. She has worked with a variety of sires so I am kinda anticapating what she will produce from Mulberry. I am attaching a picture of him for those who have not seen him yet.

AJ,

This isn't the Durham Red Cross, however there is another breed that is called, "Lincoln Red" which is supposed to be a Homozygous red shorthorn.

Here are a couple of pictures that were sent to me sometime back from someone who visited a Lincoln Red Herd.  I believe it was up in Illinois.

Larry Lorenz at Grant Park, ILL used to have some Lincoln Reds. Probably still dues. There are some herds in Ontario yet. They used to be quite popular here. Quite a few herds in Britain yet. They are thickmade, have lots of depth and volume. Most are just a little too sloppy in their lower third for me.... and they can have some udder problems. Clean up the udders, add a little more natural muscling and clean them up some and you would have a pretty good beast. Sounds simple.... right?

Will - If it's not to much trouble could you post a picture of the bull and a couple of the calves? I would be very interested in seeing a true RD bull.
I will try and attatch a picture of the bull.  All I have is a picture of him as calf.  I can try and get updated pictures of him and some calves this weekend.

We had solid red Durham Reds last year mated RED/REd. This year even a roan on red still produce red but looks darker. The dark roan DR female we sold last year ( $12,000) mated to a red SH produced red with white bellied bul. The line up this year looks interesting. Glad to see the interest grow in DR.

Will, didn't you e-mail me a 2yr-old pic of him standing in your Bermuda Grass? I still have that pic saved in my Y! account, if you want it back.

Will....what is his breeding?
He is a chateau 744 on the red angus side and a gold spear on the shorthorn side.  His reg # is ar45072 and his name is JB Red Power 6B10.  We are very excited about his potential.  His first calves are around 30 days old and their are two heifers that could be special.  We have a limited amount of semen  available.  If he works as well as I think he is going to we will promote him next year.  A little differant thought process, but I did not want to promote or recommend him until he has proved himself.  We put him in with a small group of ten heifers when he was 12 months and he has pretty much been with cows ever since.  I will get 22 calves this fall and I am not sure how many Jeff Bedwell will get.  By this time next spring we should know how he is going to work.  So far I am very pleased.

I did send you a picture of him when he was 18 months while he was with those heifers.  I think that picture is saved on the computer at my other office.. The rain is great.  I am growing web feet.  My neighbor told me this morning that in last 60 days we have gotten 32 inches of rain.  Two years ago we only got 29 all year.

They only get 12" in a wet year down in Eagle Pass. Didn't see very many cows down there, but, the ones I saw, looked awfully good. "Environmnetal Adaptability" is priority over price per pound, in that area of the USA.

Will that is one nice looking young fella! 8)

What type of calf is he throwing? Are you going to track carcass data?

Thanks for the picture!
The calves seem to be coming easy and getting up quick.  I have one bull calf out of a gizmo daughter that is a tank.  He is solid red and is as stout as the clubby calves.  I have two heifers out of an impact shaker son and super dazzler daughters that have hiefer calves that look like they could be very good.  Still early, but I am happy so far.
