What do Charolais members remember about Charolais bull FR 31 ----

Alger calves never impressed me since he was a dedicated heifer bull.  An interesting experiment would be to breed a couple head of cowws to Alger and few more  each to Big Benand Cedardale Tyrant just to see how yesterday's breeding compares today's.

If you have any expensive  Impair semen don't waste it on a grade cow. Their is an ad on the Charolais Banner site looking to buy Impair semen ($$$).

What if a guy bred FR31 to a Unlimited Limited Ease 9108 daughter, would that be a fair comparison ....  My memory is getting bad ,but I don't remember a single
French bull that I would have used on first calf  heifer's .....

Full French bulls exist that can be safely bred to heifers.  The problem is to get that calving ease you give up so much in the calf relative to any common domestic calving ease bull why use him?  Recently a claving ease Full French bull with know good calving came up for sale and he brought $ 15,000 because he also sired some nce calves.  If he was not full Fench he wouldn't have brought a third of that.  This observation is backed up by what is happening in Scandinavia where North American CCharolais dominate due to better quality calves the fact they are easier calving is considered a nice bonus.
This not to say some fench bulls are not good Impair and the polled bull Virgil have something to offer but on the whole no matter how easy calving they make Full french they must improve the quality of the average animal to make them an important part of the charolais business again.

Yes, it sure is and if your interested in more history of the bull go to Jamie Fred on facebook and there is some interesting history from people who knew more about the bull
then I did ....My memory is not so good the older I get ....More pictures also ....

Roughly when would that picture have been taken?  Would Butch have been the one pulling all of the string around for Vic when that was taken?

I think Butch would still been there cause he said he helped with picture  of FR 31 by the windmill with Jim Koch ...

i have a couple of units of alger in my tank. his son crestomere alger sired some good cattle for us in the early 70's. some of the best cattle i have ever seen were buff 3/4 charolais 1/4 shorthorn. the half bloods were good too.
