What is the target weight for your show steer on show day?
« on: February 11, 2007, 01:05:11 PM »
I was just wondering this question because we don't actually show steers, we show bulls and heifers due to we raise for breeding stock.

The reason why I ask, I have a ton of people who buy halters and are looking for various sizes all labeled "steer size".  I list them as being up to 1,300 lbs and anything over that is considered bull/dairy cow.  I was told this last summer at a Purina Show Seminar week from Kirk Stierwaldt that your target weight should be 1,250-1,300 lbs. on show day.

Grant it, I realize people show their steers at jackpots along the way of their steers growing to this size but isn't 1,400 and 1,500 a bit on the larger size????

The only market animals that we have to deal with weights on are pigs. :P(stinky pigs)

Just wondering.   ;D

Good question, in Ohio, it seems the target wieght is usually about 1200-1300 pounds. Alot of kids though at our county fair are showing steers in the 1400-1500 pound range. Why? More $ for the steer.

alot depends on the frame size of the steer.  125-1300 seems about ideal though.  (cow)

Yep, it's all about the size of the frame. I show at weights 1260, 1330, 1250, etc. Some look great at over 1300; others this is over the top.

Here we have to be between 1100 and 1400 lbs.  Most winners are between 1250 and 1350.  We have late summer fairs. (cow)
