I am doing something tomorrow that I have never done before. My wife has talked me into taking a " non cow" getaway. We are actually going to Vegas for 5 days and this will be the very first time in my life that I have been 5 days away from home that did not involve cows in some way ( other than a stint in the hospital one time). Usually I am hauling cows, visiting cow owners, attending a cattle show etc etc. This will actually be the first time my wife and I have ever gone anywhere together on a trip when we did not have a stock trailer packed full of cattle, or that cattle were involved in the trip in some other way.For some reason, Chris does not consider that to be a holiday!  I tell people that I have seen almost of North America, except the parts where normal people go for holidays.
With each day that gets closer to our departure, I am really wondering what I will do with 5 days without cattle to check, cows to feed, show cattle to start to work with, and all the other hundreds of things that happen on a normal day at the ranch. Actually, it does bother me a bit as I am a person who is very uncomfortable when I don't have anything to do. My wife tells me if I get bored, I can sit and watch people for awhile, and she says we will see all kinds of them. I tell her that if  wanted to watch people, I could spend a couple hours in the local Walmart. Anyone have any ideas of what I can do in Vegas to keep from losing my mind?

Jill dragged me a couple of years ago and I really enjoyed it. Lots to see and do, kind of like another dimension! I enjoyed driving out in the desert even when the GPS lied and got us lost (lol)

JIT -
1) Take a picture of a Sparkle and look at it when you get the longing
2) Book your trip so you can go to the PBR - it's bovines but they buck and are boys
3) Drive out of the city - the scenery is beautiful
4) The city is one big concrete hunk with flashing lights and glitz - mentally prepare yourself for the fact that you will not see birds, grass, or trees as long as you are in LV
5) Have a good time eating and maybe going to a show
6) Take a few good novels and a copy of Shorthorn Country
6) Realize when you leave you will be very grateful that you do not live there :)

Dan... I thought the GPS only lied in Quebec. My GPS again got me very lost in Montreal last Sunday and I finally shut it off and did the unthinkable... I stopped and asked for directions to the airport!  I almost missed my plane and I had to do some sweet talking to get them to reopen the door of the plane so I could get on! I would never live in that God forsaken city! It took over 4 hours to go 85 km ( 52 miles) with most of this time stopped on the freeways in Montreal. It seems everytime I go to Quebec, my GPS screws up!

Wife and I went for the first time in April. We took a day trip out most days to see other things. Even drove to California for lunch one day just to say we had been to California! Sat in the sun and soaked up some rays. Watched a couple shows, Tournament of Kings at Excalibur was pretty good. Fremont Street at night is a fun spot to watch and enjoy people. Oh, and my wife spent a lot of time playing slots, not my cup of tea but she loves it. I think that there is enough to do to keep you as busy as you want to be. Sometimes it is just good for the soul to have nothing you "need" to do so you can really and honestly relax. I know I have a hard time doing that when I am at home or away on "cattle" trips.

JIT, I go every year for work. I'm out there for a week. Check out the Hoover Dam, it's pretty neat.
The buffet at the MGM is the best one in Vegas. They have killer crab legs and prime rib. All you can eat for like $25 per person. There is a restaurant called "9 Fine Irishmen " , it's a Irish pub taken apart in Ireland and reassembled inside New York New York . It has the best onion rings I've ever had. They marinate them in bloody mary mix , then beer batter fry them. I think one of the best steaks in Vegas is at " Nick and Anthony's " in the Golden Nugget. It is down on Fremont Street in the old section of town. That section is pretty neat.
As far as watching people , it's got Walmart beat hands down. You will see it all and then some.
We usually do at least 1 show each year.(unfortunately it's not a cattle show).
If you watch them on TV, I've been to Pawn Stars pawn shop and to Rick's Restorations. They have some pretty neat stuff.
I head out there this year on Oct.28th, you talk about freak show. Vegas on Halloween is a definite sight.
Have a good time!!!!

When you are there you can sit in the sun and think of Shorthorn bulls names.

The first thing is to remember is stay away from the strip.  The strip is the carney show the locals run to fleece the tourists. Eating off the strip will save you $$$ as well.
I would rent a car and get around. Some things to see:
1. Hoover Dam- Everyone sees it but still very impressive
2. Red Rock Canyon Conservation Area: http://www.redrockcanyonlv.org/
3. Mount Charleston  Vegas can be very hot and barren, Mount Charleston has trees, running water and is 20 degrees cooler.  It is a Vegas favorite, a very nice hotel/casino as well: http://www.mtcharlestonresort.com/
4.  The Atomic Bomb Museum: http://www.atomictestingmuseum.org/pid12museum.html
By no means pay to get into the Ferrari dealer in the Wynn.  You can go to any other Ferrari dealer and they won't charge you to be on the show room-what a rip.

Visit Old Vegas at night. Great fun.
Take good shoes you can walk in.
Buy the pass for the bus that you can get on and off with ease. Will save the good shoes you take.
Go see Carrot Top at the Luxor. One of the highlights of our last trip.

We arrived home at 3 am this morning. 5 days with no cows, no computer and no vehicle was about enough for both of us. To top it off, I couldn't even get my email on my cell phone and we had a terrible time finding an internet cafe anywhere in Vegas.
We were told that there were 800,000 tourists in Vegas when we arrived on Monday and I believe it! It was literally hard to even walk on the sidewalks at any time of the day or night. I think we saw every shape and size of humanity on earth on this trip. We tried to see as much as we could and I think we saw 8 shows along with many of the other exhibits available. The Cirque du Soliel Ka show at the MGM Grand was something I will remember for the rest of my life. I would gladly head back to Vegas again just to see this show again! We were very fortunate to get seats in the second row of that huge theatre and got to visit with one of the lead characters before the show began. He told us, that when the previous long running show ended there, that over $200 Million was invested in that show theatre alone before the Ka show opened. I can honestly say it was the most amazing show I have ever seen... anywhere. I guess I was not expecting the performers from all the shows to be so willing to visit with anyone who wanted to do so. The Blue Man Group show was also great and when the show ended they came off stage and came into the crowd and talked. We had a great visit with 2 of the 3 members in teh Blue Man Group, which is something I never expected would happen... very down to earth, genuine guys. Their show is hilarious.

Chris and I are not really gamblers, but before we left for Vegas, my dad gave me a $20 bill and he told me to make him some money ( of course he was just joking and he never dreamt he would see anything from his $20 again!). On the first night there, I decided to put the $20 into a slot machine and see how many minutes it would take to lose it. Within 10 minutes of doing this, I had made $230 so I cashed out and put the money in my wallet before I lost it all. My dad was very surprised when I gave him the $230 this morning. Chris had a lucky streak the second night and somehow made a $20 bill turn into $600, in less than 30 minutes. She actually came home with more money than she went with.  I told her she should be opening a magic act beside  Chris Angel, because the magic she preformed was just as impressive as what he does.

The biggest disappointment we saw was our tour of the Pawn Stars shop. What a dive!!  A rundown building with very little in it to look at. The biggest display of anything was Pawn Star T-shirts and " I love Chum-Lee T shirts " for a sweet $60 each. I really like the show, but somehow I resisted buying one! It was nothing like it appears on the show. Quite frankly it was a virtual total waste of time, and there are better pawn shops in my small home town.

In  any event, I am glad we made the trip, but quite frankly, I have seen all the cement, glitz, marble and people I need to see for a long time into the future. It certainly felt really great to head out and check all the pastures this morning. I spent my entire day today showing 3 seperate visitors our cattle , and I could not help but think about how fortunate we are to be able to make our living from the cattle business. After 5 days with wall to wall people from around the world, I was again reminded of what I have said many times over the years... that being that " the more I deal with people, the better I like cows."  If this trip did nothing else, it was a great reminder of how lucky we are to be involved in agriculture and more specifically, with the production of cattle. I think many of us often forget how fortunate we are.

Okotoks.. old Sparkle is just that... she is getting old!  Fortunately, she has started to flush good again after Davis -Rairdan tried a new flushing techique with her. Her last 3 flushes have been some of her best ever. I am hoping we can get a few more embryos from some different sires before she has to go. That will be a very sad day for me. Both her and her Pioneer daughter have been flushed 3 times each for some New Zealand breeders, and both will be flushed next week again for ourselves. I decided to use Ralph Larson's " Easy" bull on old Sparkle this time, and we are using Paintearth Rama on Sparkle Delight 2X.
